this episode is so perfect. the yellow esteem. i hate that car all throughout this show. I thought it was comic and also degrading that jimmy stuck around the car even when he got promoted to a cushy davis & main job and he even gets to ride an audi for awhile before he brought back the esteem. the car seems to me is jimmy’s persona if it was a car. battered, underestimated and colorful, yet like the chucaraca it continues to keep going. even in this episode, when all the other cars were shot the esteem managed to bring jimmy and mike a couple of miles further. at the end, the esteem had to leave the scene just as this episode seems to solidify that jimmy has left the scene and saul has truly taken his place. the space blanket. when mike whips out the space blanket in the desert, a part of me screams as if i was seeing the ghost of someone i know. if that was the reaction me (a viewer, separated forever by the 4th wall) has reacted with, imagine what would have run through jimmy’s head. Bob odenkirk is a masterclass in acting performances, because even if its a small moment, not even a full minute when he looks at the space blanket before he finally refused it, choosing to suffer the cold of the desert, you can see it in his eyes. the recognition, the ghost of a past not too far away yet. the last shootout. Lalo’s comment about jimmy being a chucaraca is eventually what defines jimmy’s action at the last scene. As if refusing to go down, not by a group of angry cartel men, not by the heat or the cold of the desert, not by the inherent suffering that the desert’s dryness brought, saul goodman just refuses to go down. When another one of the angry cartel men took his chance to take him down during that last scene, he took it upon himself (with help from mike) to make his fate his. That even if he got run down by a 4 wheeler, it would be of his own choosing. Even if i believe, saul believed that deep down, he knew the car wouldn’t have hit him. Despite the fact that his entire life has seemed to be a series of bad lucks, saul goodman is actually a very lucky man. And i think he knew that just as much as i the viewer knows it.
