Quite a journey, isn’t it?
It’s not every day you binge a show with 106 episodes. A series that’s given me highs and lows, moments of admiration and frustration. But one thing’s for sure: I’ve formed a real connection with it.
Where do I even start? Dexter Morgan.
A character who wasn’t always at his best throughout these 106 episodes, but who completely fascinated me in the early seasons. In the later ones, he was either poorly written or just uninteresting, but still enjoyable to watch. Luckily, they scrapped the original ending because it would have completely changed how I viewed him. New Blood’s conclusion, on the other hand, is perfect in my eyes. And every single Resurrection episode? Yeah, they’re all getting a 0.5-star rating from me out of principle.
Overall, Dexter as a character is the show’s biggest strength. A brilliant performance by Michael C. Hall, who—even if he clearly wasn’t as invested in season 8—still completely embodied the character. His internal monologues were fascinating, the show’s concept was incredibly unique, and Dexter had an impressive level of depth. He’s officially one of my favorite TV characters now.
The supporting cast is underrated.
They’re not the greatest secondary characters of all time, but each one has their own charm and is genuinely impacted by Dexter’s actions.
• Debra grew on me over time—like fine wine. She barely saves the later seasons (which could have been even worse 💀💀).
• Masuka was hilarious and lovable—I wish we had gotten more of him.
• Quinn & Batista? An iconic duo, making us laugh but also keeping us on edge.
• Dexter’s love interests all contributed something to his character arc.
• Rita left the biggest mark. There’s a clear before and after her. An iconic, endearing character—and honestly, the kind of woman every man dreams of marrying.
• Lumen had the potential to be just as impactful, but she came in way too soon after season 4’s events, and their ending was beyond disappointing.
• Hannah? A complete letdown. By the end of season 7, I was convinced she’d be my favorite. But I was wrong. Her storyline in the finale and season 8 was dull, forced, annoying—just bad. Nobody bought into it. A total disappointment.
Dexter’s villains are mostly solid.
• Trinity remains a legendary antagonist, marking an unforgettable turning point for the show.
• Izak was enjoyable.
• Jordan was forgettable.
• And Travis? Absolute garbage.
The show is incredibly “watchable.”
It’s an easy binge, especially in the first half. And I’ll never forget the Miami atmosphere—it’s iconic.
At its peak, Dexter is some of the best television ever made. Those early seasons left a lasting impact on me. A streak of phenomenal storytelling, building up to an exceptional climax. But then… the next four seasons happened. Mediocre—except for season 7, which was actually very good.
Then New Blood came in, trying to redeem the show with a perfect ending… only to ruin everything again by announcing Resurrection.
Final thoughts.
Dexter is a very good show—one I could see myself rewatching (especially the first four seasons and some select episodes from the later ones). But it has a terrible habit of ruining itself in the end. That’s one of my biggest takeaways from this series, and it’s frustrating because it could have been an all-time great, an essential piece of television history.
Still, thank you for this journey through Miami—it entertained me in a truly incredible way.
