Adolescence is a great miniseries and one of the best things to come out of Netflix in a long time. I watched it because I was intrigued by all the praise for the technical elements, but I quickly discovered that there is a lot more to it than that.
The show is undoubtedly a technical marvel. Everyone has been raving about the one-shot technique and I completely understand why. What they've done here is incredibly impressive. Every episode is filmed in a single continuous take with no cuts which is nothing short of amazing. I was constantly wondering how they pulled it off, especially during the school episode. That kind of preparation and coordination is truly commendable. It's flawlessly executed and it adds a lot to the story and its impact.
Storywise, Adolescence has just as much to offer. The episodes are perfectly paced, and beautifully written, although it feels like not everything is fully fleshed out. The show does a good job exploring relevant topics like the negative impact of social media, masculinity, and incel culture, but at times it only scratches the surface instead of fully delving into these issues. I also felt that some of the characters, particularly those in episode 2 were kinda overlooked and needed a bit more depth. I honestly wish the show was longer so it could properly explore everything. The acting from the entire cast is top-notch. Owen Cooper delivers an excellent performance with a lot of depth. Stephen Graham is also fantastic, bringing a lot of vulnerability to his role. Ashley Walters, Erin Doherty, and Christine Tremarco are exceptional in all their scenes as well.
Overall, while not perfect, Adolescence is a gripping, thought-provoking crime drama that impresses in many different ways. It's not a particularly fun show to watch, but it's very timely and honest and will leave a lasting impression.
