The Wire (2002)
For some reason , the scene were Tommy talks while his face is getting reflected on the table below reminded me of JMM. So your homework is to exaggerate this idea and imagine that I wrote 3 more paragraphs in this review. I guess this is the turning point of the season? Things starting between Omar and Marlo is definitely going to be peak. The intro scene explained what Marlo really is to me. Every death so far has happened for a reason but the death of the security guard was so petty. Wire is filled with grey characters - you have corrupt government officials , egoistic cops , drug peddlers who do good you don't have a clear definition of what's good and what's bad which makes Wire the closest representation of reality but if I had to say someone who is the closest to evil it's Marlo. It was so petty and psychotic. The security even says I am not disrespecting you , I just want to go to my family but he kills him without any second thought for a candy? No doubt this has to be one of the harshest killings in this show because whoever died deserved it one way or the other but not this guard. This scene combined with the ring scene and the scene at the pigeon place Ed and David have done a wonderful job in explaining Marlo's character just in a matter of single episode. I mean when you look at it he wants Michael to be his soldier , doesn't want to join co-op , takes Bodie's corner , plans to kill his poker mates when he loses interest since he is not winning just because he can. He is absolutely ruthless and to pit him against the adrenaline loving action hero Omar who just like Marlo does whatever the fuck he wants , Prop Joe is so sly and Omar touching Marlo's money was already bad and stealing his ring(his pride) was just salt in Marlo's wounds. I think Michael's going to get caught up in all this and die like I said in my previous review. I feel that the Prez quote was wasted on this episode. That quote was so good and I wanted it to be used in a better place not while describing a sports match which doesn't make that much sense to me. I love how they subtly used Michael's quote "I don't want to owe anyone" he used in episode 2 while he was with Cutty. When Cutty puts his arm around Michael he moves away , he intentionally talks about the boxer's girl to make Cutty feel negative about him , doesn't want Cutty to drop him home. So much stuff happening in this episode. The kid with Bubs trying to learn from the basic because he was 3 grades behind and Prez noticing it was so heartwarming. The dialogue where Bubs goes "you have to see the small book(dictionary) and do the big book(algebra)" was sad and funny at the same time. Everyone pulling Gregg's leg was so funny.
