Is this a good season of television? I would definitively say no to that question. Did they land the ending and then some? Fuck yeah they did.
A lot of structural deficits to this season, some of them glaringly obvious, have significantly hampered my enjoyment of this season. Especially during the final run of episodes. It’s a show that knows where it wants to go but not quite how to get there, which leads to characters not behaving like themselves or the storytelling becoming increasingly laborious. The Reghabi and Cobel arcs are examples of this.
Some good ideas were explored this season and some were threaded on for far too long, and I’m hoping a status quo shift in the next season can change that. That’s the only way I see this show moving forward.
Also add some more humour! It’s obvious the writers have brought into the whole sappy prestige TV appeal of this and that’s resulted in a dialling down of the humour this season, which makes the proceedings seem so wooden. But the news of the writers room getting shuffled next season and Sean Clements being added brings up my hopes.
Erickson said that this season was supposed to represent adolescence for the innies, and that makes sense considering the increased focus on the power of love and how the ending plays out, but I’m a little bummed out by how the “organised labour” thread was left underdeveloped, which was what made S1 so excellent in the first place. Considering the innies are moving into the young adult part of their lives next, I hope it actually focuses on them rebelling against their employer or something along those lines (forming a union maybe? Threatening to hold the outies hostage?).
Anyways, I could keep rambling about the number of issues I have with this season, but I want to add that the finale is very, very special TV. Like wow. Just absolutely floored me. Honestly, it was worth getting through this season to see that finale, and that’s why I’d recommend watching it.
