This miniseries is one of the most unsettling and accurate portrayals of modern online harassment, radicalization, and misogyny. It captures something that a lot of media misses—the way bullying and abuse have evolved into something more insidious and more under-the-radar. “Cyberbullying” is not what it used to be, and not what many older generations believe it still is. It’s no longer always flat-out slurs or insults, but it’s subtle blink-and-you-miss-it jabs, twisted uses of emojis, and simply liking another comment/getting “ratio’d” that reinforces the cruelty. Though it’s a bit devastating to see played out in media, this is a critical understanding of how younger generations interact.
Bringing Andrew Tate’s ideology into the narrative was a bold but necessary choice because his influence is undeniable. While it’d be a ridiculous claim to say that he single-handedly makes young men behave this way, it’d also be ridiculous to act like he’s been no catalyst. This show and Jamie’s behavior never feels totally exaggerated because, sadly, it isn’t.
The performances are nothing short of phenomenal, with Owen delivering a simultaneous incredible debut, but also a career-defining role. His portrayal of Jamie is terrifying because of his quiet entitlement, his simmering rage, his ability to switch between charm and cruelty in an instant. Being able to portray that is genuinely masterful.
What makes the series so haunting is the question it forces us to consider— are young men like Jamie being brainwashed, or was this always inside them, waiting for stimuli to trigger it? The way he speaks about his mother versus his father, the way he moves through the world with the assumption that women owe him something, the way he only holds back when he knows he’s being watched by a man, every detail is meticulously crafted to expose the reality of how deeply ingrained this mindset can be.
This show isn’t just a cautionary tale. It’s the truth. It doesn’t offer easy answers because there aren’t any. It simply forces us to sit with an unbearable truth.
