I actually read the book this is based on only a month ago because, well, I have an unhealthy fascination about the White House. It’s a solid piece of non-fiction, I get how you could see the potential for a whodunnit there. And I think there should be more original whodunnits, it’s a shame they confirm that Benoit Blanc is fictional in the universe of this show because you know him and Cordelia would be great friends. Whodunnits necessarily need a distinct sense of place so as someone who in the past has remarked when shows that haven’t been completely accurate in their depictions (because, yes I am that guy) it’s nice to find a creator that shares my fastidiousness. It’s liberal brained to be sure, it’s little more than a backdrop. Complete with a cameo from Kylie Minogue, you can tell the makers of this show were wishing on a Kamala presidency. If anything though the book is more a biography about the cast of characters than it is about the house, having this show mainly be alums from Veep and Brooklyn Nine-Nine, including what should’ve been the late great Andre Braugher, would’ve caught my interest regardless and they bring a nice sense of playfulness.
