Primos (2024)
I remember the backlash for this show more than the marketing for it, but with all the talk about it being problematic or culturally ignorant. I did what most people on Twitter never do, sit down and actually WATCH the show, and now that I have watched the entire season from its debut to its end. I can now come out and say that all the things people said about the show pre debut are wring and absolutely invalid. This show turned out to be alot better than we all made it out to be. What we got was a fun, funny and at times heartwarming slice of life coming of age summer adventure. It's honest, down to earth and defiently has this adolescent innocence of the world while also never dumbing it down for kids, there's jokes and stories that I see appeal to adults as well. This show is very progressive not just in its diversity of culture and other aspects but also in the minorities WITHIN the minorities. The show does address the so called inaccuracies of the Spanish language by making it Taters whole arc in the season, to the point where you can see that not knowing her own native tongue actually makes her feel like an outsider and how she wants to take an interest in it as well and how not easy it is to jump into another language. I find it very relatable as someone whose mixed race and has not 100% spoken my tribes native tongue. In fact, I feel alot of kids like Tater who watch this show will resonate with this the most since we don't get alot of media tackling people like her. In fact, I could feel how personal the series is given that this is loosely based on the creators childhood, most notably her memories of the summer with her cousins or Primos that is. In fact, I like the little levels of nuance and respect they give towards everybody, parts of it kinda reminds me of slice of life cartoons from the 90s like Hey Arnold which funny enough has the same composer for this show. The animation style also has this home made feel with the linework having this pencil thiccness/texture to it all that makes you not forget these are drawings. I also like Tater as a character, she does start off as being annoying but gradually got better for me over time, she does grow as a character from a selfish brat who wants everything to be her way to expanding her horizons thanks to spending time with her primos. In fact, I like the Primos amd their individual personalities, infact throughout the whole season, we get individual episodes on the primos and learn more about them as we go along the show. I will say yeah there are some cringe moments here and there and mabye one or two episodes I don't care for but for the most part I enjoyed the vibes it brought and funny enough, for a disney channel cartoon, it looks and feels like a show on cartoon network. I will say for the last thing to end things off is this, these Disney channel cartoons have come and gone, I loved The Owl House, Amphibia, and The Ghost and Molly McGee and recently Hailey's On It. And this show is similar to Hailey's On It nit in concept but the fact that it has one season only so far and a pretty lengthy season as well, the difference is, that Primos does not end on a CLIFFHANGER. I like the way it ends, it does leave a little bit of room for as they hint a couple of more seasons and mabye a movie. But till then, I'm happy with how it ends, it feels very full circle and satisfying enough. I've gotten used to these Disney Channel cartoons getting this stick given to them. Till then, I'll miss the colorful summer of the Primos.
