i know this is too long, but if you can, take a few minutes to read it. it would mean a lot. thx. 🙃
there are stories that stay with you, that live inside u long after they end. and then there are stories that don’t just stay - they change something in you. mr. robot isn’t just the greatest show i’ve ever seen. it’s one of the most deeply personal experiences i’ve ever had with fiction of any kind. yk, i’ve always carried the show dark with me. it’s my favorite piece of fiction ever, not only for its brilliance & symbolisms but bc of how deeply i connected with its characters. they still feel like a part of me, like people i’ve truly known. i never thought another show/story could reach that level, but mr. robot did. it didn’t just match dark in its emotional depth, it delivered a conclusion that, in so many ways, was even stronger. because while dark is about fate, about cycles beyond our control, mr. robot is about something even more intimate. it's about identity. about the war we fight within ourselves. and the way they told that story, with such precision & such raw emotion, made it one of the most unforgettable journeys i’ve ever been on and probably ever will.
so, the show is built on tension. not just plot tension, but existential tension. every season is a layer, peeling back something you thought you understood, only to reveal more shadows beneath. the story follows elliot alderson (aka best protag oat 😍) but it doesn’t just follow him, it traps you with him. his perspective is the lens through which the world is seen, & when that perspective cracks, so does everything else. the storytelling is deliberate, slow-burning at times, explosive at others, but always purposeful. the plot twists aren’t there for shock value. they feel inevitable, as if the story was always leading there, waiting for u to catch up. and that’s where the magic happens: "mr. robot" is an experience as much as it is a story. it doesn’t hand u answers. it makes you feel elliot’s isolation, his confusion, his moments of clarity that might not even be real. you’re not just a viewer; you’re complicit, a part of his mind, a voice he speaks to but never quite trusts. this dynamic is rare, intimate, unsettling. and that's what hooked me in the first place. now, said that, elliot is the kind of character who doesn’t just stay with you, he settles into the corners of your mind, in the quiet moments when you least expect it. there’s something about him that feels devastatingly real, as if he isn’t just written but understood in a way that fiction rarely allows. his pain is not performative, not a device for sympathy. it is lived, breathed, carried in the way he speaks, in the way his body tenses when the world becomes too much, in the way his eyes shift between defiance and the kind of loneliness that sinks into your bones. his struggle with identity is not just about the fractures within him; it's about the very nature of self. if he strips away the lies, the illusions, the anger, what remains? is there a real elliot beneath it all, or is he just a collection of fragmented versions, pieced together by the people who see him? the show never gives an easy answer because there isn’t one (until 413 obv). & that’s what makes him one of the most profound characters ever written imo. he embodies a question that so many feel but never know how to ask. his moments of triumph are not grand. they are fleeting, quiet, the kind u only recognize once they’re gone. a choice to care when apathy would be easier. a brief moment of peace before the weight of existence crashes down again. & when it’s all over, when his story has been told, he doesn’t fade. he lingers. like a whisper you can’t quite hear. like a truth you almost understand.
but if elliot is the heart of the show, angela is its soul. her journey is a quiet yet seismic force, an evolution that feels both inevitable & heartbreakingly profound. as her transformation unfolds, she emerges not merely as a companion to elliot, but as a soul that reflects the same scars and yearning for justice that haunt him. her character is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit: forged by loss, tempered by betrayal, and emboldened by an unwavering hope to reclaim a future stolen by darkness. in every nuanced moment between angela & elliot, there exists an unspoken language of shared pain and delicate understanding. their connection is woven from the threads of a mutual past - a history marked by the relentless weight of broken systems and shattered dreams. it's in the silent glances, the hesitations before spoken words, that their true emotions are laid bare. this is not the conventional kind of love; it is a profound, almost sacred understanding, where two souls who have witnessed the depths of despair find solace in one another’s resolve. angela’s evolution is one of those rare transformations that leaves an indelible mark on the heart. each step she takes away from her past is a quiet rebellion against the forces that sought to define her, & every moment of vulnerability is a testament to her strength. her fate, as devastating as it is poignant, resonates deeply because it encapsulates the cost of fighting a system built on silence and control. in her, we see the bittersweet beauty of resilience - a reminder that even in our darkest hours, there exists a fragile spark of hope, burning quietly against the tide. her story is as much a reflection of our own struggles as it is a part of the narrative fabric of the show. angela’s pain, her moments of fierce determination, & the quiet triumphs of her spirit create a tapestry of emotions that linger long after the screen fades. in witnessing her transformation, one is reminded that every act of courage - no matter how small - can illuminate the path through the deepest shadows. i'll really miss this girl forever 🥲❤️.
now, even tho mr. robot has a way smaller cast than shows like dark, game of thrones or twd, every single character is incredible in their own way & some of my favorites ever. mr. robot himself is such a fascinating character. at first, he feels like this powerful, almost intimidating presence, but after a while, u start to see the cracks. once the truth about him fully unravels, everything just hits different. his dynamic w/ elliot (the mastermind) is another level fr, one of those things that feels completely unique to this show. the way he shifts from a guide to something way more complicated makes him one of the most interesting characters to watch. and my man tyrell is one of the weirdest & most unpredictable characters i’ve ever connected with. his whole arc is tragic in a way that rlly sticks with you. he starts off chasing power, believing he’s destined for something greater, but in the end, he’s just another lost soul. even when he gets some kind of peace, it still feels sad (also i luv how he mirrors elliot, almost like he was meant to be a version of him in another life). everything abt him is unsettling, but at the same time there’s something strangely emotional about his story. also dom is so unfairly underrated. from the very first moment she appeared, i fell in love w her (not just because she's hot 🙈) bc her presence is just so strong. i'll never understand why there are ppl who finds her boring. her s4 arc was one of the most intense parts of the entire show. her dynamic w darlene was another thing that made her stand out. it was messy, tragic and way too real (it's a hell to love women fr). & darlene herself is obviously one of the best characters in the show. her relationship w elliot is so raw, and the way they go from pushing each other away to being the only ones who truly understand each other is just heartbreaking. anyway she was something rlly special to watch. & then there’s whiterose... i won’t lie, i could never TRULY like her, mostly because of what she did to my girl angela, that was just unforgivable. but at the same time, i understand her. her backstory, her obsession with time, her entire belief in another reality where no one has to suffer... it’s pretty hard not to sympathize with that. her methods were horrible, but her motivations made her such an interesting villain. her dynamic w price was also amazing, their scenes together were some of the best in the show. anyway, even with such a small cast, every character here are important & they all bring something to the story that wouldn’t be the same without them.
+ i also appreciate how each character in this show serves a precise, almost inevitable role in elliot’s journey. angela is the emotional undercurrent, the reflection of everything he’s lost & everything he still longs to hold onto. tyrell & whiterose represent the larger forces shaping his reality - power, control, and the illusion of choice. darlene and dom ground his struggle, keeping it tethered to something real, reminding him (and us) that even in isolation, connections still exist. i luv how each one of them is a necessary piece of the world elliot is trying to understand, fight, or escape. also i could dive deeper into the dynamics between them, but i feel like i've already talked a lot abt that in my other reviews. just know that it’s fkn genius how they handled them all with such care.
beyond allat, what moves me most in this show is its courageous fusion of symbolism, social critique & existential inquiry. every frame and every subtle detail beckons us to look past the mundane, to confront the often harsh realities that shape our existence in the most beautiful way ever. the imagery is not there by accident. each mask, each shadow, each deliberate pause in the narrative is a quiet challenge to the status quo. a call to peel back the layers of society’s illusions & discover the truth hidden within. the show speaks to the fractures in our modern world, exposing the relentless gears of power that often leave us feeling isolated and insignificant. it reminds us that beneath the surface of everyday life, there is a raw, pulsating undercurrent of resistance and longing for authenticity. moreover, the show delves into profound existential questions, inviting us to ask: what is the nature of our identity? how do we define ourselves in a world that is constantly trying to mold us into predetermined shapes? who are we when we strip away our masks? "mr. robot" challenges us to consider the difference between the persona we present to the world & the true self hidden beneath layers of defense and pretense. it asks: what remains when society’s expectations & our own façades are peeled away, revealing the raw, unfiltered core of our being? and, what's the nature of reality? in a world where perceptions are constantly questioned, "mr. robot" forces us to ponder if our understanding of reality is merely a construct - a fragile illusion crafted by our experiences and the systems that govern us. is there an underlying truth beyond the appearances, or are we forever trapped in a maze of our own making? & is freedom an attainable ideal, or just a mirage? the show also confronts us with the paradox of liberation in a world designed to confine. it asks whether our choices are truly our own or if we are bound by invisible chains forged by societal structures and our internal struggles. the narrative dares us to question the very fabric of reality, compelling us to reflect on our own struggles, fears, & the quiet moments of defiance that make us truly alive. this relentless exploration of the self and society transforms each scene into a meditation on life’s impermanence and the enduring human spirit. in this intricate tapestry of visuals and ideas, "mr. robot" offers a poignant reminder that our most painful truths can also be our greatest sources of strength. it's in this delicate balance of despair & hope that we find the courage to face our inner darkness and the resilience to strive for a better tomorrow. i'll NEVER shut up about this.
but the most important is that, for me, elliot stands as a constant reminder that it's okay to feel shattered while still finding the strength to rebuild piece by piece. his life, steeped in the pain of early trauma & the relentless echoes of his past, shows that our brokenness doesn't define us. it transforms into resilience when we dare to embrace vulnerability. watching him confront the deep scars of his childhood and the chaos within, i feel a profound connection that tells me it's acceptable to let go of old burdens and welcome a new, honest self. every moment of his struggle carries a raw honesty that reassures me that healing is a slow, sometimes painful process, but one filled with moments of quiet triumph. in his reflection, i see the possibility of rediscovering beauty in imperfection and strength in every scar. there’s also a resonating echo in angela's own path; a journey of transformation that, while uniquely hers, perfectly complements his. her evolution reinforces the idea that growth comes from accepting all parts of who we are, a mix of light & shadow that makes us wonderfully human. in the end, elliot's story is a powerful call to honor our struggles and to believe that no matter how many pieces we feel we’ve lost, we can always find a way to come back together, even if it takes time.
some stories you watch. some stories you carry. "mr. robot" is a story i'll carry forever. ❤️🩹
