9.5/10 An absolute triumph, easily the best season yet and a shining example of how to adapt beloved comic book material. As someone who loved the comic, especially the story arc they tackled here, I went in thinking they might mess it up. Instead, they blew me away, adding layers of emotional and psychological depth to both the characters and the story that I didn’t even realize were missing from the source material. Rex Splode, in particular, was a revelation this season. He went from a character I barely cared about in the comics to one of my favorites in the show. The writing elevated his arc to something genuinely impactful, and that kind of thoughtful character work is everywhere this season. The last three episodes were nothing short of phenomenal, with “All I Can Say Is I’m Sorry” standing out as one of my favorite episodes of any show, period. The way this series handles emotional and psychological themes is unmatched in superhero media. Most shows shy away from these explorations or don’t care enough about their characters, but here, you can feel Robert Kirkman’s dedication to making them resonate. The voice acting is stellar across the board, with Steven Yeun delivering as always, but Aaron Paul and Jeffrey Dean Morgan really stole the spotlight this season. The one glaring issue, though, is the animation. It’s infuriating that Amazon pours money into stuff like Rings of Power while leaving this show with a budget that feels like pocket change. The lack of investment is so frustrating because this is the show people genuinely love. Thankfully, the writing is leagues above the comics, which compensates for the subpar animation. If they were doing a 1:1 adaptation with this level of animation, it’d be a much harder sell. Still, even with its flaws, this season solidified the show as one of my all-time favorites. It’s adapting my favorite comic in ways I couldn’t have imagined, and I can’t wait to see what future seasons bring.
