This episode was the most edge of the seat, breath holdingest thing ive watched this year. The acting by Erin Doherty and Owen Cooper man holy shit. One moment they’re having great back and forth. Jamie’s charismatic and at the drop of a hat he fires off at her. I feel so bad for Briony sitting in this room with a 13 yo boy she’s clearly terrified of and trying to save face. And he even calls her… bro you get a terrifying glimpse into this generation of incels and revenge porn. I flipped from “he couldn’t have done it,” in the first ep to “do NOT let him out!” Not much is said about his views on women but you can get it from context and from asking yourself, “would he react that way if a she was a man?” Briony gets her answer by digging deeper. Plus the sprinkling in of an overly friendly officer mansplaining. (She’s a child psychologist bro she knows about body language..) Jamie clearly has low self esteem and has learned manipulation in pursuit of a gf. They talk about how this rule that Jamie seems to believe “80% of women are attracted to 20% of men.” This is “black pilled” rhetoric man. All the while, twice Jamie chuffs up and gets threatening, and tries to belittle her because he feels embarrassed. We learn that Jamie rationalizes threatening a girl with a knife because he could have done a lot worse. And after all that asks Briony, “Do you like me?” I feel like that says alot and Briony got the answer she needed. Jamie thinks masculinity is having women show you their tits, and being popular. It’s not letting women order you around. It’s not hitting women unless they make you angry which is a very masculine emotion.
