Secret Level is a solid concept but it doesn’t always deliver on its potential. An animated anthology about different video game worlds sounds like a dream for gamers and there are moments where this show really nails it. The best episodes in my opinion were: 1. Warhammer 40,000: And They Shall Know No Fear 2. Unreal Tournament: Xan, 3. PAC-MAN: Circle, 4. Armored Core: Asset Management 5. Honor of Kings: The Way of All Things Those episodes did exactly what they’re supposed to. They bring these worlds to life with great animation, solid storytelling and just the right amount of fan service. They respect the source material without feeling like straight-up cutscenes from a game. But then there are episodes that just don’t work. 1. Crossfire: Good Conflict, 2. Mega Man: Start, 3. Spelunky: Tally 4. Playtime: Fulfillment These episodes felt underwhelming. Some lacked depth, others felt rushed and a few didn’t really seem to capture the spirit of the game they were adapting. They weren’t completely unwatchable, but they didn’t hit the mark either. The rest of the episodes were just fine, nothing amazing, nothing terrible, just mid. Visually, the show looks great. The animation is fluid and every episode has its own unique style while still feeling cohesive. But the writing is inconsistent. Some stories manage to balance action, lore and emotional weight, while others feel like they exist just to show off cool visuals. The biggest issue is that a lot of episodes feel like they were made for people who already know and love the games, rather than telling a compelling story that anyone could enjoy. That’s fine for hardcore fans, but it limits how engaging the show can be. Overall, Secret Level is a mixed bag. When it’s good, it’s really good. When it’s bad, it’s forgettable. It’s the kind of show that has great individual episodes but doesn’t quite work as a complete season.
