I can’t believe this show went out of my radar for all those years. I’ve always been looking for a great pirate show and here it is. This show definitely is one of the greatest TV I have watched. I was expecting it to be in my top 20 shows from when I started, but I wasn’t expecting it to be in my top 5, and guess what, it actually is!! For now, this show is my t3 piece od TV, and I doubt that something will outrank it very soon (except 6 Feet Under maybe).
I went into this show as a pirate fan and left as a pirate myself. After learning that chapfer of the pirate History, just like this show is a part of me, I feel I am a part of them. The truth is that the pirate History pictured in Black Sails isn’t random, it reflects the History of the all the humanity. The characters are all unique in their own way, some filled with anger, other with love, and all afraid of their darkness.
One thing I admire about Black Sails is how they dealt with the salvation topic. I don’t know if it was true that a group of black slaves joined the pirates to fight against the civilisation, but this is actually so fascinating. Then, the women and queer representations are other topics that made me love that show. I usually don’t like female characters so much so it was such a surprise to mw that I did. Even though I didn’t love every woman character (Max lol…), I still enjoyes most of them. Anne Bonny, Eleanor, and Madi definitely were fascinating, especially Anne. Then, about the queer representation, even though it isn’t the most queer show I’ve watched, it might be the greastest representation I’ve seen. As in that it wasn’t special, it was there without too much or not enough mention. It has his own part in the story. And that’s all I want as a queer person, to be part of the story, it doesn’t need to be focus on, but not forgotten either; being there is enough, especially for that type of show.
The last thing I wanna mention before all my rankings are the monologues. Especially from Flint, but from most of the main character of the show. They all have at least one incredible monologue. This show is similar to the last show I’ve watched before when it comes to this; True Detective. Both with amazing dialogues AND monologues (True Detective better tho).

Greatest continuous plot I ever saw. It could be a whole 38 episodes season and I wouldn’t mind. It could be longer and I wouldn’t mind.

Silver and Flint are interchangeable regarding the seasons, it’s difficult for me to make a choice between both of us globally, Flint lead from S1 to S3 and Silver S3 a d S4 in an equivalent of greatness. As Billy said: 𝑻𝒉𝒆𝒚 𝒈𝒓𝒐𝒘𝒏 𝒔𝒐 𝒄𝒍𝒐𝒔𝒆 𝒊𝒕 𝒘𝒂𝒔 𝒉𝒂𝒓𝒅 𝒕𝒐 𝒌𝒏𝒐𝒘 𝒘𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒐𝒏𝒆 𝒆𝒏𝒅𝒆𝒅 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒐𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓 𝒃𝒆𝒈𝒂𝒏. Taking a step back from the show, I think Flint is in fact the greatest in this show, and he definitely is part of my favourite protagonist of all time (he is since season 1).

A man who wants to be forgiven by the others, and to be forgiven by himself first. James McGraw’s forgiveness to the pirate Captain James Flint. Captain Flint has been created to revenge James McGraw and what he lost, his love, Thomas. Flint is the powerful disguise of the outside, while McGraw is the heart and the painful memories of the inside. His character have been fascinating from the very start to the very end. And the conclusion to his character is one of my favourite ever, he finally found Thomas and his inside hidden identity. He found his love back and himself. That’s just beautiful, thank you Silver for making this possible.
𝟮-𝗟𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗝𝗼𝗵𝗻 𝗦𝗶𝗹𝘃𝗲𝗿
𝑴𝒚 𝒏𝒂𝒎𝒆 𝒊𝒔 𝑱𝒐𝒉𝒏 𝑺𝒊𝒍𝒗𝒆𝒓, 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑰 𝒉𝒂𝒗𝒆 𝒂 𝒍𝒐𝒏𝒈
𝒇𝒖𝒄𝒌𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒎𝒆𝒎𝒐𝒓𝒚.
A man who doesn’t want to be pitied and want to understand Flint and to be his equal. It’s crazy how his character has evolved from the start. He was "just a cook", and now he is the "king of pirates". His bound with Flint is what made him greater until he became his equal and even more. Definitely my favourite deuteragonist so far.
𝟯-𝗝𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗥𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗵𝗮𝗺
A man who wants to be remembered. That has always been his goal. And he is remembered still today. His name is in the History book, he did it. His character was in the background in S1, then under Max boring shadow in S2 and then became one of the greatest characters of the show in the two last seasons. His development might be less iconic than Silver’s but still is impressive.
𝟰-𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝗩𝗮𝗻𝗲
A man in need of love, from comrades, a father, or a lover. A man who died for History, for rebellion. His dynamics are one of the best thing of his character, with Teach, with Jack, with Eleanor and with Flint. They are all amazing.
Then, I can’t make a choice between Bonny, Blackbeard and the governor. So they are all interchangeable.
𝟱-𝗔𝗻𝗻𝗲 𝗕𝗼𝗻𝗻𝘆
Even though Bonny didn’t really interested me in the first seasons, she definitely became greater in the last. And her dynamic with Jack definitely is the best of her character in my opinion. Also, I love when women are represented just as strong as men in terms of fighting I mean, and she definitely is.
𝟲-𝗘𝗱𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵 "𝗕𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗯𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗱"
A man who wished to have a son, and that son is Charles Vane. Their dynamic truly was one of my favourite part of S3, even though we didn’t got enough time from them. I find it interesting how Blackbeard wasn’t the most feared pirate in the show, contradictory to how he is remembered today. I wish we had a miniseries of the past events of the first Spanish invasion of Nassau, where he had his part. I wish his character had arrived sonner in the show, or simply didn’t die. His death by the way was traumatic, I still think of it sometimes and damn, I wish I didn’t see that.
𝟳-𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗚𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗼𝗿
His character definitely impressed me in this last season so I wanted to mention him. He was an amazing villain in this show.
Madi might be t7, Eleanor t8, and Billy t10. Billy went down from being my t3 character in the first two season to being one of the last because of his character in S4…

No words can praise this dynamic as it deserves. This is definitely part of my favourite of all times, might even be my t1. Their bound is so precious. It built up slowly through the seasons and is really at his finest in S3 and S4, definitely my true favourite thing about the show. The way they care for each other, both afraid of their own darkness and impressed by the darkness of the other. They both admire each other, an admiration sometimes lead by fear of each other’s next moved. Their rivalry in the last episode was insanely good.

They are truly each other’s person. They always take care of each other and are the true partners that won’t betray each other. I love them very much.
𝟯-𝗝𝗮𝗰𝗸⥃𝗩𝗮𝗻𝗲
I love this dynamic just as much as I like Vane with Teach; they are similar in some ways. Jack is the protege of Vane, impressed by him, just like Vane is for Teach.
As I mentionned, many Vane’s dynamics are amazing and I won’t talk about all of them because I can’t figure out a proper way to rank those, I’ll just list those here: 𝗘𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗻𝗼𝗿⥃𝗩𝗮𝗻𝗲, 𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵⥃𝗩𝗮𝗻𝗲, 𝗙𝗹𝗶𝗻𝘁⥃𝗩𝗮𝗻𝗲. Kind of like Vane, Silver’s dynamics are all incredible too, directly from the start with Randall: 𝗦𝗶𝗹𝘃𝗲𝗿⥃𝗠𝗮𝗱𝗶, 𝗦𝗶𝗹𝘃𝗲𝗿⥃𝗥𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗹𝗹, 𝗦𝗶𝗹𝘃𝗲𝗿⥃𝗕𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘆, 𝗦𝗶𝗹𝘃𝗲𝗿⥃𝗜𝘀𝗿𝗮𝗲𝗹.

I wasn’t expecting to like another protagonist that much after meeting Patrick Jane in Mentalist who is still my top1 protagonist of all time. Flint is interchangeable with Ragnar from Viking as top2. Today I wanna say Flint is winning that t2 spot, but it might be because I just ended the show.
Flint lead the show godly. He controls his crew and the spectator itself. He will make you believe that what he does is the right thing even when it isn’t. He also has one of the best monologues of TV I’ve seen after Rust Cohle in True Detective.
𝗚𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗧 𝗣𝗘𝗥𝗙𝗢𝗥𝗠𝗔𝗡𝗖𝗘𝗦 (+𝟬.𝟭)
I think my opinion regarding their acting performance is influenced by their character because I love them so much, but yeah obviously Flint and Silver’s actors win the award.
-𝗧𝗼𝗯𝘆 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽𝗵𝗲𝗻𝘀- 𝗮𝘀 𝗖𝗮𝗽𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗙𝗹𝗶𝗻𝘁
Toby Stephens has a way of telling monologue that would compel me to any end, whatever he would say. There is also a scene in S3 that really amazed me; when Flint cries and that was such a great touching scene.
-𝗟𝘂𝗸𝗲 𝗔𝗿𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗱- 𝗮𝘀 𝗝𝗼𝗵𝗻 𝗦𝗶𝗹𝘃𝗲𝗿
When I firstly truly noticed his great acting performance was in 3x7, when Silvers gives a speech to the pirates who accepted the pardons, telling them Flint has returned from the dead and then, and that moment was that his greatest acting performance in the show, he savagely murders Dufresne. That death wasn’t the worst death in terms of savagery and violence (Teach was obviously…) but it was still really impressive thanks to Luke acting. And of course, Luke is also very good to express the emotions. I think to this scene of him crying after learning Madi’s death for example.
𝗚𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗧 𝗢𝗣𝗘𝗡𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗧𝗛𝗘𝗠𝗘 (+𝟬.𝟭)
Even though the opening theme isn’t that complex, it still is one of my favourite. I would love to study what and who the images represent. And the music is perfectly adapted to the show. I never skipped it, expect when I just couldn’t wait to start my episode (like the two last ones for example).

Most of the famous monologues are from Flint, and the most iconic shorter quotes are from Silver and the governor. And obviously few from other important characters as Vane and Jack. Dialogues and monologues definitely are the second best thing of the show after Silver x Flint dynamic. You know that when Flint starts talking, it will automatically be peak.
