Lost (2004)
An instantly recognizable phenomenon. The pilot of Lost is largely recognized as one of the greatest ever—and deservedly so—but the rest of the season more than lives up to it. Especially for an opening season, this is so utterly accomplished and exciting. The premise is one filled with potential and yet the show still manages to outdo one’s expectations, adding such creative layers that it’s no wonder why it’s become such a blueprint for the mind-bending and mystique-filled side of television. But more than just being an endless thrill ride, Lost is a show dependent on its ensemble cast, and each and every one of them show up to work their magic. Jack, Kate, Locke, Sawyer, Charlie, you name them; every character is well acted and well written, each backstory full of compelling depth and detail. It’s in this dual structure of past and present that the series finds its addicting identity. I couldn’t help but keep wanting a glimpse into who these people are and what makes them tick, which only makes their actions on the island that much more interesting. And by the time it ends, it’s clear that this has only been a peek and so much more lies ahead. I can’t wait to see what more this world has in store.
