Hannibal (2013)
Spoilers A truly spectacular piece of fiction that I’m so happy I have watched and been able to experience. It’s such a wonderful story with dark themes of humankind and human nature , wrong and good , god , philosophy, and so much more. It’s so fun to watch . The show explores its characters so seemingly well for the most part , and it’s a unique, breath of fresh air that exuberates creative flair in the form of storytelling and a great understanding of the psychology behind the characters and their actions, whether justified or not, fleshing out the morally ambiguous and grey in an interesting way. Having Will grow betrayal in a sense from both sides— Hannibal and the FBI causing a conflict and crisis between the “ good” people who use him for self-benefit to his own detriment or the man who set him up— but also he can relate to and has some form of connection and understanding for . A great example of this is previously mentioned is Jack. He is, in definition, the good guy. He works for the FBI but uses people around him like props , an end to a means. He claims he cares, and to a certain extent, he may, but overall, he doesn’t . I find Will extremely underrated and complex and just as good as Hannibal. I truly think he’s one of my fav protagonists in media and especially in tv, and Hannibal extremely likeable for the disturbing , cold-hearted killer he is, which just shows how well written the characters are and even, in fairness to season 3, however inconsistent, the characters remain interesting, intelligent, and well written and have fleshed out motives . The acting and Dialogue I found to be good but also a little dull , the acting of mads and hugh was outstanding and really engaging and added to the characters and other actors too I found to be really good but also at times the delivery to be off , the dialogue, writing for will and Hannibal / Hannibal’s philosophy and wold views was definitely where the most attention to detail went and understandably so , just wish it wasn’t to the detriment of others dialogue which is evident especially in season 3 , also wish that the acting for the others in the cast was more consistent. I also absolutely treasure the dream and surreal elements of the show they are so interesting and unique you get a glimpse and essence into wills mind and perspective in away through imagery and I love it and really don’t think it could be replicated , I think this is brought out even more by how well shot the show is , and filmed it’s really amazing and makes everything more dynamic and enjoyable wether it’s a shot of Hannibals reflection in a knife or the shot of a murder victim or even wills dreams and view of Hannibal and I love it . Se1 and 2 are by my definition almost perfect. They have a fun format for the most part with extremely interesting characters and criminals to catch , which reflects a mental struggle of will or a person object to overcome normally revolving around love or a personal confrontation and lack of understanding in who he truly is. It’s so hard to watch Will go from strong to slowly mentally weak and lost and getting taken advantage of but satisfying to see how strong and confident he becomes through the rest of the show . The imagery from Will’s dreams and how he views Hannibal as a twisted demon version of the stag that guides him is so fascinating and really surreal , which is expanded on and even more brought forward in season 2— a truly amazing and intense watch , every episode laying the groundwork for the finale , a defining moment in Will and Hannibal’s relationship, and it’s so good and tense and flows so beautifully. However, season 3 really drags this show from an easy 9/10 to a lower score. The needless plots and lack of care for detail like the previous two show, and it’s actually jarring and painful to sit through at times. The red dragon plot is cool , the writing in areas could do with work, but it’s okay; the issue is the character Is cringe he talks and speaks so cringey with clichéd and predictable laughable dialogue, and it’s a shame and lets the show down. The constant use of showing us 2x13 too was annoying. Yes, we know it was great; don’t show us it and then let us down with another 20 mins of slop . Again, the fake character deaths became boring and annoying and silly. It felt like a cop-out and like I was watching Got Se8 all over . However, the 10 mid-episodes are somewhat redeemable by 3x13— a perfect watch , intense , dark , gritty, and an extremely good ending. After 3 seasons watching Hannibal and Will fully understand and accept each other and kill together was so satisfying and really well. Shot and really furthers their dynamic forward. It’s so cool but also really well written. They accept one another and understand it. That’s ultimately Hannibal’s obsession with Will. Is that he has found himself in someone in a sense? And the final shot and sequence of them together is so weirdly beautiful and tragic but a really great conclusion to not just their characters but their dynamics. Season 3 is an unfortunate let down and mess with an incredible final episode that carries hard, but unfortunately the season isn’t made of one episode but 12 others . Mizumono was a true spectacle show and payoff for the series. It’s a peak in the show in terms of acting , writing, and even camera work. The characters are so fucking interesting. Will has a choice. He doesn’t know himself who his loyalties lie with, but when he chooses Jack , Hannibal kills Abigail. He breaks the teacup and rebuilds it for Will, but just as easy as it is, he brings it back. He takes it away. It’s interesting. Hannibal is intelligent and cunning , rarely acting out of any emotion, even anger, but the betrayal he feels of Will hits him so deep it breaks his heart and world, so he acts out of pettiness and takes Will’s. The Wrath of the Lamb is similar too. It’s a triumph in the tv show and a conclusion and a great one at that. The dynamic between Will and Hannibal has been fleshed out so well, and seeing them fight together was something I never expected to see but happy to have witnessed. I haven’t really looked at the meanings and philosophy of the last moments , but to me , Will embraced the side of himself he’s scared of and that Hannibal accepts, but it still scares him. He knows that Hannibal will get away again and he’s free to kill. He knows he’s gone too far maybe and that what’s best is to sacrifice himself. He’s the lamb , a sacrifice to god , taking away the demon being Hannibal . The final look of Will’s acceptance and realisation of events seeing Hannibal won and got what he wanted was such a beautiful and tasteful shot, a truly beautiful show. Season 1 - 8.5/10 Season 2- 9.5/10 Season 3- 6.7/10( can change and will change) Top 2 Eps 1- mizumono 2- the wrath of the lambs Show as a whole - 8.5/10 ( will change )
