I think the serialized format really served the story of Dex and Emma well. Though it's very tempting to binge you still have the option to pause and take stock of a single episode. And the conceit of 'one day' offers that kind of distillation of time and its meaning. The temporal and philosophical approach to understanding its linearity lies in this ability to make a single day feel as if it's a lifetime. In the end it's love. It's crucial to also understand that their love story is representative of the way relationships have eventually become complex in the 20th/21st century when it seemed to be, or should've been, a no-brainer. It's not a coincidence that we begin at the end of the 80s where neoliberalism offered us choices and possibilities but in truth are just modern entrapments. I love the choice of Ambika Mod as Emma and Leo Woodall has that same boyish charm of Jim Sturgess as Dexter. Watching this made Nichols's novel really matter more.
