what a solid pilot. ben stiller's direction is superb, the cinematography is literally eye candy. the constant symmetry in all the shots is so captivating as well as symbolic of the severance procedure, and there's so much more neat camera work such as the slow dolly zoom in the elevator and the set pieces such as the desks creating unique angles as well. i could easily be entertained just by the cinematography and it plays such a huge factor because there's so many long shots with only music playing that create such an interesting atmosphere.
the opener does a good job of raising sooo many questions and the slow reveal is incredibly satisfying. the writers constantly tease the viewer with small hints until finally explaining the severance procedure but even after that the thriller aspects of the show start to display with Petey and the outside life (mrs. selvig/ms. cobel) and how the operation works. consider me hooked because i was glued to the screen for the entire episode. everything works perfectly from the comedy to the mysteriousness to the off beat rhythm and creepy atmosphere that lingers beneath the surface. hyped to watch more
