Mindhunter remains one of the most brutal crime series on contemporary television in its second season. That said, it must be firmly stated that the second installment in 2019 is not up to the level of the initial season in 2017.
Let's break it down. The most obvious and easy thing to comment on is how the visual and technical essence is maintained throughout the 19 episodes. And it's a magnificent thing, since it's well known that there were several directors at the helm. Good work in direction, photography, soundtrack and production design. The general plot doesn't require the performances to be protagonists so everyone remains at a decent level, although perhaps Holt's arc could have benefited from something more than empty, hard and thoughtful expressions.
Well, then what brings down the rating? In my opinion, the script. As the characters themselves complained several times, the field work drastically reduced the screen time of the interviews with serial killers, the psychological strategies carried out by the agents, the team analysis of the monsters they have been able to lock up and a long etcetera that was very enjoyable in the first season. In this second, yes, the main case is brutal, it is heartbreaking, and it can evoke a lot of sentimentality, but it is below the expectations that the series builds for itself. Wendy's arc itself feels like absolutely unnecessary filler, leaving aside a great character. So the doubts that arise are focused on the choice of the plot for the general script of the second season. Was it the case that the series needed? Of course not.
Now, I insist. Technically, the series remains impeccable and that is what keeps Mindhunter in the elite of the series of the previous decade.
I hope that there is someday a third season with a good argumentative closure for the main trio, because Atlanta did not do any favors to Joe Penhall's series.
