Poster for When the Phone Rings
I really, really liked the beginning. The arranged marriage trope where the couple goes from disliking (or being indifferent) towards each other to falling in love is always a fun one. But episode 11 should have been the last one. Episode 12 was nonsensical and weird in the context of the story we'd been following. That forced last layer of drama was wholly unnecessary. Especially when there was stuff about the ML's past that was plenty dramatic and yet got completely glossed over (for spoilers go check out my comment for the last episode). I'm still giving it an 8 because I liked the story as a whole—the makjang tropes made this an easy to binge show, but they were restrained to just the right point where the melodrama was there without falling into eye-roll territory—and the acting was top notch all around. I bought into the characters so much it even took me a ridiculously long time to realize intimidating Sa Eon was the same soft-hearted pediatrician from Hospital Playlist LOL (but FU Netflix for subtitling his last name as "Paik" instead of "Baek"). Also, the chemistry between the leads was fantastic. If these sort of things ever happened, I think this would be a perfect show for a spin off to explore the story of the FL's older sister. She seemed like such an interesting and complex character but we didn't even get to scratch the surface with her. There's an idea for you Netflix!
