It’s good to be back but man what a disappointing opener. Just feel like this is lacking substance and is mostly a bunch of mini-events stringed together—and hey, I get it, that’s the comic, but it’s definitely easier reading something like this instead of watching it. I do like the tiny tidbits you get of character writing; Mark being more “okay” with brutally killing people (albeit clones, of course) is sort of a sign of him getting edgier. I believe him being harsher with his morals is overcompensation for killing Angstrom too, which is actually quite cool. However, I am severely tired of this show’s inability to evolve & get better. Three seasons in. Two huge seasons with mountains of success… could not amount to ‘good’ animation—hell, even ‘serviceable’ animation. Because this is NOT serviceable, it’s lacking in every fucking way. The visual direction is boring (even more so after watching Creature Commandos), shots are directionless—and they’re not even accurate to the comic because that shit has a knack for color & striking panels. There’s about seven frames for every fight scene. The proportions of the characters & surroundings is awful and takes me out like every other second—which come on, is a pretty big problem within a story that’s supposed to be immersive. I also just lowkey continue to hate some of these new character designs, I stand by the fact that season one Mark (& pretty much everyone) looked the best. It’s unreal how S1E8 has actual cinematography in mind and is the only episode that consistently looks brilliant… I miss it so much (that shot of Mark getting his teeth knocked out lives rent free in my mind). There’s absolutely no reason this should still look this bad. Like I hate to be that guy but animation in an animated show is pretty important, you know? Just like visuals in a general sense are important in a movie, or a show, because it’s a *visual medium*. I’ve seen a lot of people defend the way this looks or somehow find fault with the people that have an issue with it, like no, this looks objectively below average, and that’s an issue. Amazon is such a joke.
