I am not one to watch TV shows due to the requirement of being committed to watching religiously. Therefore, I prefer to consume movies. However, after hearing my bestie glazing the show and borderline demanding me to watch it with him, I gave in... And, it was a very refreshing and stimulating experience.
The eerie and cryptic atmosphere is what pulled me in immediately, shortly put, the Lynchian mood. Followed by Seasons 1 and 2 that mixed those vibes with cosiness, which made watching it very comforting and memorable. However, with Season 3 I did not grasp that feeling, at all. It does feel like I was watching a complete different show, with a bunch of new faces and per se, I struggle getting familiar with new characters, moreover getting attached to them. But, it all got progressively even more insane, which I LOVED that.
Despite Twin Peaks being inconsistent, when they decide to write the best piece of fiction, it is so worth it. Beyond Life & Death is one of my favourite episodes of all time due to it having everything I love about the show in one single episode. Then, Part 8 being completely different, but it encapsulates exactly what I like about David Lynch.
In spite of the constant ups and downs, it is all linked to its slow pacing. Which, I won't lie, if I watched this alone I would've probably not been as invested the whole runtime but, watching it in company made it all bearable. Nonetheless, the show taking its time for the most amazing climaxes has been worth it. Plus, it reached a point where I got attached to certain characters, and that is something I value a lot.
Back to the positive aspects because it seems like I hate this show (I do not). The supernatural themes, like for example, my favourite scenes were the ones in the red room, whenever those were part of an episode I knew it would be rated with a minimum of 4 stars. Also, them not being too recurrent during the first seasons made it more special and enticing. Then other supernatural stuff (specially in The Return) that I did not understand completely, nor I want to, were just as captivating.
Twin Peaks, being mostly up for interpretation and not giving two fucks about explaining what is actually going on, it's part of the charm. Followed by the meta-readings of the community, which most of them are insane 😭It did initially throw me off, but I appreciate how ambiguous it is when it wants to be. And honestly, sort of like Donnie Darko, I very much prefer being left with this state of confusion than breaking the mystery trying to come up with every single answer (then most likely killing myself).
With this said, I do get the general picture. Moreover, the allegories/metaphors that serve a much deeper symbolism for the plot were very well done, like for example Bob's character being every single horrid shit in this world in one entity.
Cannot talk about Twin Peaks without mentioning its music. Angelo Badalamenti is a legend, and he created one of the best soundtracks of all time. His music made such a positive impact in the show that it definitely would not have been as great if he was not involved. Yet, The Return doesn't fall short despite its music being played differently with individual mini concerts by the end of each chapter. Every single performance kept getting better than the last one.
In conclusion, because I think I ran out about things to say... Twin Peaks was a great show and definitely worth the watch, despite having its flaws. Every Lynch and surrealism enjoyer should give it a try.
