Mad Men (2007)
*takes a deep breath* I feel like this was overhyped. This is an episode that feels more like an extended epilogue to a much more satisfying episode. Maybe I'm greedy or picky but I really do think the show should have ended two episodes ago. Or at most an episode. I think it wrapped things up for everyone too neatly for me, in a way that feels anticlimactic. Especially much of the Peggy storyline, save the phone call. Joan has a nice conclusion where she has to decide between love and work but her decision to leave McCann earlier is a stronger emotional ending. And Bruce Greenwood's character should have been introduced earlier to make Joan's ending really satisfying. The ending montage showing the various characters living their lives is a little hokey, good as it is. Sort of diminishes the emotional high of their episodes especially for Betty and Pete's. The Roger-Marie scene in the cafe is great tho. Don's stuff is the absolute best in the episode, as he continues his soul searching after his unceremonious exodus out of New York. After crashing out multiple times in later seasons, squandering great opportunities, seeing him become vulnerable and ultimately contended is satisfying. And perhaps in a manner that exemplifies Mad Men's unique storytelling rhythm it ends with an ad. Did Don make it? That's too easy for me. I think it works in a more irrational level. As if the world, which the show captures a microcosm of, can find a perfect harmony. Or at least the characters of Mad Men do.
