S3 was a trip to the Top Of The World in a post-apocalyptic world for one final mystery to be solved while giving closure to this sweet story & its brave characters. Every episode was a stop over for a deeper story & they deliver beautifully on them all: The echos to intensity the dialogues & situations post the avalanche (E1); the realism & helping Theo to accept himself after such immense pressure (E2) (even I want a cave like his); exploring the confined setting of a ship (Kudos to Christian for handling such dark emotions) (E4); a long await meet of Gus to her mom’s tribe, the intense action when Bear’s team invades Zhang’s hideout with the single shot scene (E7); a parallel to OBX3’s finale upon delivering upon a 3 season long hunt for the cave with all the Attention To Detail elements adding up & the whole vibe created (E7) & much more! Love how rational everyone was before making any conclusions.
Characters growths & closures:
• Bear (Stefania Owen) - always been my favourite & her growth in S3 was lovely. While learning to be an elder sister & questioning her action against the wolf hybrids, her sacrifice in the end almost shattered my heart. Fueled by her beliefs (from her dialogues) & firm by her dedication, Becky will go down as one of the best written characters of TV History! Great subplot with Jordan.
• Gus (Christian) / the most dedicated to pull off this journey of dreams while inspiring many other lost hybrids & having that innocent hope to help all humans just so that he could save his loved ones takes a lot of talent. I had kind of guessed it in mid last ep, but him being the narrator makes so much sense!
• Big Man (Nonso Anozie) was being foreshadowed to have a terrible fate from the start which grew by the snow on his beard or passing Gus’s mantle to Birdie. Still not sure if he survived or was it in Gus’s head, but leaves his impact with finally showing his football back story.
• Birdie (Amy Seimetz) had a short lived but much awaited reunion with Gus which brought tears. Was happy to learn that he was in the safest of hands with Jepp & Pubba. Her fate was shockingly unexpected but made sense.
• Wendy (Naledi Murray) had her shining moments (especially the molotov), grew closer to Bear upon her loss from S2 & seeked comfort with Gus (especially in the silhouette in E1 (“Does it ever stop hurting?”).
• Rosie (Kelly Tran) - established as an anti hero (grey area) with a traumatic backstory of trying to earn respect in the eyes of her terrible mom. Her bond with her boys was beautiful.
• Mrs Zhang (Rosiland Chao) made General Abbot shy from her inhumane side, having the passion to restore a world which never wanted to accept her in the first place.
• Siana (Cara Gee) - a strong addition & a great support to birdie. Her bond with Nuka (Ayazhan) was unbeatable, while Nuka had a firm grip on being a sly arctic fox & could win over anyone with her subtle display of expressions.
• Dr Singh (Adeel Akhtar) - a much awaited collab with Gus but didn’t like how his arc turned out as I couldn’t watch one of my favourite characters from S1 turn into this! Had a redemption in the last ep, but I dont think Rani would ever forgive him for his actions.
How did none of the sniper shots hit Gus in plain sight? Visible use of VFX in the ocean. I always saw Gus & Wendy as siblings who had each other's back, so I was a little taken aback by the fact they got married, but I guess they got that narrative from Becky.
Overall, Sweet Tooth S3 is one of the few Netflix shows which didn’t get stretched, bounced backed from a bumpy S2 & had a beautifully satisfying conclusion that brought a huge smile on my face. After all, DC is full of such underrated stories. Thank you for these fond memories over the past few years 💙
