If I had known this was a soap opera before I started watching it, I wouldn't have started it. If, in a hypothetical case, I had ever had the will and desire to know what an American telenovela is, I wouldn't have watched Big Little Lies, and if I had, I would have gotten the same awful impression I have now after having endured these eternal seven episodes.
A plot with a confusing and saturated beginning, a slow pace almost as if it were a series for bears about to go into hibernation, and to top it all off, one of the worst season finales I've ever seen in a series: Absolutely anticlimactic, without explosion, without spark, without any motivation.
The characters have such redundant arcs that this could have perfectly been condensed into a 2-hour movie instead of an endless 7-hour story. Incredibly, the acting is good, but it's the least you'd expect from such a cast. All that saves the rating are mere technical aspects. Photography, sound, production design.
It's really a shame that the producers weren't able to capitalize on an adaptation that could have been quite different.
I always end up saying who I recommend the movie or series I'm writing about to, but this time, I don't recommend this even to people with similar life stories, because this soporific choice is a gigantic mistake.
