This was basically a group of purpose lost witches bonding with each other while on a journey to solve escape rooms (trails). Full marks to the costume design, how accurate every costume was according to the themes & set pieces of the different trails or when Agatha gets free from the spell (slowly breaking through all her past looks from WV). Really liked how they modernised many witchy concepts like making a cauldron from a sink or the makeshift brooms, being a hardcore fan of TCAOS my sweet memories & all the magical terminology got refreshed. The cinematography was another well done aspect, especially for E7 when the room goes upside down with the slo mo, the entire episode uses the non linear storytelling beautifully by not just becoming one of the best Eps of this show, but a perfectly made cinematic entity in general. Following the footsteps of WV, E1 was an amazing rip off / parody of a classic murder mystery (Mare of East Town). Being a hardcore comic book fan, I can never get enough of Comic Accurate suit ups & I was screaming in E8’s while watching Agatha, Billy & Rio with their looks & powers!
While having a lore rich story, it also digs deep into all it’s characters:
• Kathryn Hahn is an absolute perfectionist of character work. The sly smile, savageness, hand movements, dialogue delivery (“You want straight answers? Ask a straight lady” etc) & poses that she carries shows that she was born to play Agatha. Her bond with Nic & later Billy was her defining factor & is showcased brilliantly with the score & screenplay.
• Aubrey Plaza I was not familiar with your game ma’am. She steals the show whenever she’s on screen. That tension & chemistry of Rio & Agatha was to live for & when it finally happened, it felt like a warm hug to the audience rooting for them until you realise its cost (“She is my scar”- GOOSEBUMPS). *spoiler* Her being foreshadowed & finally turning into Lady Death was a jaw dropping moment with the atmosphere created!
• Joe Locke started as a classic teen fanboy of witchcraft but as we start to explore Wiccan, we see his similarities with Wanda, especially *spoiler* the fact that he himself created the Witch’s road by the attention to detail of his room just like his mom created Westview, I was mind blown with this twist (shout out to ComicVerse for this detail). He shines in E6 & boy what a thoughtful backstory that was! Billy’s reveal with Billie’s song was a 100 IQ move!
• All the other witches were equally important for the plot with their well rounded arcs, be it Patti LiPone’s artsy tarot (Lilia), Ali Ahn’s deep lore with her mom (Alice, I loved vibe of the rock performance & fire in E4, Sasheer’s dedication for potions while figuring out her wants (Jen) or Debra being the audience representative (Mrs Hart). Evan Peters’s cameo hits different after watching him in X-Men, along with the nostalgic songs!
At times the Visual Effects felt under done, especially the green screen while flying on broom. The initial few episodes were a little slow but soon caught pace. Mephisto name drop was unnecessary for its anticipation. And I wished for better conclusions for Mrs Hart & Alice.
Overall, Agatha All Along is one of the most well written shows that surpassed everyone’s expectations & I’m glad that after 2 lousy MCU show finales (Echo & Secret Invasion), this had an unorthodox yet impactful conclusion while making us excited for the future with finding Tommy. Fade to white instead of black was an amazing hint for Vision Quest!
