Filled to the brim with charming characters, genre eccentricities, and some of the most memorably stylized animation I’ve ever seen, it’s hard not to have a total blast with Dan Da Dan. As a romcom, it fulfills both of those elements with loads to spare. The humor is consistently entertaining as the show never hesitates to veer into sillier and absurdist territory, but it’s always grounded back by the relationship between its lead duo, both of whom you can’t help but root for throughout. It’s this focus on fun and games that really gives the series its identity, because for as great as the action is, utilizing the medium to its advantage at every turn, there’s just as much to be delighted by in the slice-of-life shenanigans and character interactions, especially with a supporting cast that naturally lends themselves to a plethora of hysterical interactions and situations. This is not to say that Dan Da Dan is lacking in resonant drama—“To a Kinder World” is a certified masterpiece in that regard and little bits and pieces can be found everywhere—but more so that the show has a wide range of sensibilities, ensuring that, from the start, it is exceedingly easy to just sit back and sink into every new episode. By the end, I couldn’t get enough.
