i like love death and robots way more than most people, because despite the big issue of there being WAY too much cgi porn, and a bunch of shit episodes, you never know what to expect, what art style, what story, how it will feel, look, what the dialogue will be like, every episode felt unique (even tho that's not always a good thing😭)
this felt so much more uninspired and repetitive. visually it looked great, but the hyper realism gets boring after a few episodes and almost all of them go for the same style of just looking realistic. that's not just 'secret level's fault tho ig since most of the games they chose don't have a great art style (that i know of).
also, since the episodes are tied to games, the episodes lose the unpredictability and personality that a lot of love death and robots' episodes have. because they had to make stories within the confines of an already developed world they aren't able to be as creative as they could be.
they could easily have chosen a wider variety of games to make it so all the stories felt new and fresh. if there was less sci fi, and, for example a red dead or elden ring or god of war or resident evil 2/7 episode it would have made me enjoy it so much more. and that's not just because i've played the games, but because they're DIFFERENT from another mindless action episode.
the music and sound design was insanely good in general, and there were a few good episodes, like the sifu and honor of kings episodes, but overall i really struggled to get through most of them. i also don't hate sci fi, but i think it's clear this show could have been so much more with more variety of games and more experimental episodes (but NOT experimental in the same way as the pac man episode😭😭)
overall: strong 4/10
