“Laugh hard… Run fast… be kind.”
Six words, and individual three messages sums up my experience with this magnificent show. I’m speechless. I don’t really know what to say other than wow, what a journey it’s been. I won’t forget a single episode of this show. I’ll always remember the amazing times I had.
The purpose of this review is just to get my thoughts across, no analysis or extremely long, in-depth insight with Shakespearean language. Just me glazing 😁
Positives:
The Doctor. What. A. Fucking. Character. This character is is a testament to TV creation. I never thought a TV character could enter my top 5 oat but here we are. This character is literally life changing with some of the greatest messages in fiction. David Tennant, Matt Smith, and Peter Capaldi delivered some of the greatest performances in TV as the 10th, 11th, and 12th Doctor’s (sorry Eccleston, you were still good) with unexpectedly many, and I mean MANY emotional moments throughout the show. This character also has some of the best peaks in TV, if not, the best peaks in tv. And 12th’s conclusion being my favourite sequence in fiction.
I also LOVED all of The Doctor’s companions. They created such amazing dynamics with The Doctor and kinda carried the show in some parts. The way they were all different from one another and how they helped develop/transform The Doctor was truly incredible. However, they created THE most emotional moments in the show, which UTTERLY destroyed me 😭. The best companion was Clara by a long-shot. She’s probably my new favourite female tv character. She literally owned s7-s9. Her & The Doctor were amazing especially in season 9. She also probably has the best female conclusion in tv too (stfu Laura stans 😎).
The world-building is easily one of the best in TV. The way everything in the universe throughout every season is interconnected with some amazing plot twist set up seasons before reveals was incredible. The places The Doctor went to were super creative and felt amazing to watch. Each planet had their own society, beliefs, people, problems etc. it was all so fleshed out. The way it also blended places and people from the original series was also amazing. Some episodes felt like filler but then those people in the episode would come back later and are actually very important. It felt very layered in a show where anything could happen. Peak.
Speaking of beautiful places, the visuals looked stunning. And by the last few seasons it was straight eye candy with shots being museum worthy. However, the first two ish seasons have some shocking cgi 🤣 after that it’s straight gas. Game of Thrones level. Like the visuals, the cinematography increasing for better to the point in s8 onwards it’s in contention for some of the best in TV. The cinematography in Heaven Sent and Twice Upon A Time is possibly the best cinematography in Television. So peak.
I never thought this show would have so many outstanding episodes. There’s like 15-20 truly amazing episodes in this show. And it’s top 10 are deadass sooo peak it’s unbelievable. But that’s nothing in comparison to the top 5, with Heaven Sent and Twice Upon A Time both being in my top 5 episodes in television (HS T4 & TUAT T1). Furthermore, the amount of peaks is aughhh. The Doctor actually might have 4 peaks in my T10 in TV 😭 that’s diabolical. No other show peaks as high as this show. Every character peaks at least once REALLY highly. Let alone my glorious universe saver. The Doctor might have the most peaks in fiction besides comic characters and my G.O.A.T Darrow. Anyways, The Doctor has like 30 amazing peaks. No joke. But that’s thanks to all the iterations of him.
Enough of the glazing, time to get into the negatives.
This show would actually be perfect if it wasn’t for three major problems: The huge inconsistencies due to the show mostly being episodic, ideas/concepts not fully being fleshed out, and the overuse of villains. Those issues are extremely apparent and are the reason why I can’t give most season a higher score than they should be. If the show were to fix this it would be literal perfect. The pacing is heavily impacted by this and maybe it’s better on a rewatch where you can choose to skip certain episodes. I wish we didn’t see villains like the Dalek’s or Cybermen every season. Instead I wished they focused on more of the Time Lords and The Master. And unfortunately, episodes that aren’t main priority feel extremely restricted with the ideas/concepts. Thus making episodes half-assed with most being half a rewrite away from being peak fiction. Other than this. Perfection.
final thoughts:
This show is indescribable. Literally. All I could say is that I wasn’t expecting this show to be THIS good. I was expecting a fun ride with a good protagonist. Not fucking peak media 😭 this show has some of my favourite things in tv including best protagonist, best conclusion, best episode, best female cast, and allot of high tier categories. Gapping most of TV. Let alone being one of the most entertaining shows I’ve watched. I enjoyed every episode with most of them being hilarious when they weren’t busy ripping my heart out 🥹. Anyways, this is one of my favourite things ever. It’s left such a heavy impact on me that it took me half a week to start writing this review. It’s left a hole in me that’s unrepairable (especially after that ending). But I gotta move on.
Doctor… I let you go.
