James Gunn’s DCU has arrived, and I’m happy to say that this was a no-nonsense, super shocking, laugh-out-loud, introduction to this weird and fascinating version of the DC Comics. Gunn is uncaged, writing some of the most bizarre and surprisingly sexual content he’s ever written for the comic book medium. In Gunn fashion, I love all of the wacky D-list selection of characters and even though this pilot episode doesn’t focus specifically on one character, it’s a great way to quickly address “what’s canon” and to show off the R-rated tone this show goes for. The voice acting from everyone is great, especially Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr., Zoe Chao as Nina Mazursky, and Idina Verma as The Bride. But most importantly, the animation is absolutely incredible. There’s a fight between Rick Flag Sr. and Doctor Phosphorus that was so much fun, and the color pops out brilliantly. In general, this met my expectations, but personally, the real star of the show was the episode that follows…
