I was fairly interested in Skeleton Crew when it was first announced but my anticipation wained with the unreliability of recent live action Star Wars. Then, the past few weeks, I started catching the marketing for the project and a new wave of hope sparked—it looked… fun? Plus with that line-up of directors, maybe the show had some potential.
Well judgment day is here. With the first two episodes out we finally get to see where Skeleton Crew lands on the varied spectrum of Star Wars stories. I’ve seen both episodes but will refer to episode 1 solely here.
Super stoked that I had a genuinely good time with this episode. The cast of kids are all charming (Fern is obnoxious but that’s the point so we’ll call the dynamic charming), and the adventure vibes are there. While it lacks the environmental tangibility that makes its inspirations so beloved, all charm is not lost in the CGI heavy volume sets. The glimpse of suburbia in Star Wars translate far more organically than I would have every predicted. There are moments of notable difference from the status quo, nothing overly disruptive.
Overall, episode one of Skeleton Crew really all I wanted it to be. It’s fun, feels structured like an actual TV show and not a chopped up movie, and sets up some seemingly thrilling adventures to come.
