Rewatching Better Call Saul. Fourteen year old me did not have the depth to fully understand this show so I’m making up for it now. Although this is a second viewing, I won’t discuss future events without an unavoidable spoiler warning + paragraph break, so first time viewers shouldn’t worry. Surprisingly amazing pilot. Introduces so many characters and dynamics while still painting a full portrait of Jimmy’s character. The black-and-white cold open is way sadder than I remembered, the way the camera makes him look so small and boxed in is depressing as hell. His introduction in the BCS timeline is so cinematic and exciting, his shadow dancing on the dirty walls of a public bathroom as he mutters and gestures to himself, only letting us fully see his face once he’s speaking in the court room. They very clearly display where he is in his character development in reference to Breaking Bad, at this point just a generally sleazy lawyer who’s not involved in criminal activities. It’s overall a pretty sad image but a very entertaining one I want to talk about the skateboard plot here. It’s so silly and comedic that it sticks out from the grounded and dramatic feel of the rest of the episode. I think it overall gives this episode’s tone a weakened impression, but it is still pretty fun to watch and necessary for reasons we’ll discuss next episode. Thank you for reading.
