Great episode. Serious highlight. Seeing the family members in complete and utter despair and anguish as they mourn Nellie was absolutely amazing. Loved seeing how the different family members uniquely grieved given their relationship with Nellie. Theo, emotionally drained character she already is, drowns her feelings with alcohol. Steve, the eldest, who blames Hugh and never once believed in the drama of Hill House, turns to blaming Nellie’s mental illness and Hugh’s encouragement of it. Shirley, the second eldest, who already has a problem engaging with her emotions, turns to controlling everyone around her, chastising Theo for drinking, lambasting Theo and Kevin for taking Steve’s book money, and lambasting Steve himself for the book, which she already deeply resents him for. Finally, Luke, closest to Nellie, is completely overwhelmed and by far the most open to legitimately grieving. Hugh, who likely already feels immense guilt for what happened with Nellie and Hill House, is almost entirely despondent and barely knows how to handle everything. Honestly, the only major drawback of this episode for me is the flashbacks. This is the one episode where I really feel they were not only entirely unnecessary, but actually dragged down the pacing and, more importantly, distracted from seeing the family reel from Nellie’s loss. But that’s not a huge issue because the flashbacks, thankfully, aren’t overly slow and don’t quite last long enough to legitimately derail the main plot line.
