This episode is so painfully average in the worst way possible. Deb randomly deciding to attempt a murder/suicide on her and Dexter was bad enough, but now, we’re just sweeping that under the rug and having Deb & Dexter just be back to normal. Great. THE most compelling, promising, and potential-laden plot line this season had to offer by far and it’s just been completely cut off at the legs. Sigh…..the problems unfortunately continue from there. AJ Yates, while a surprisingly enjoyable character thanks to Aaron McCusker’s troubled and disturbed performance, felt like a completely and utterly useless character. Like seriously, what is the point of this character? It’s painfully obvious he’s not the Brain Surgeon and the only other narrative purpose I can come up with to explain his inclusion is to establish Vogel’s unethical behavior in the past, but that justification fails for two reasons: One, the episode makes it crystal clear Yates was already a murderous psycho long before he ever met Vogel and little Vogel did did much more than aggravate an already infested wound. Problem #2, that justification is completely redundant because Vogel has been literally established as Dexter’s surrogate mom, which completely negates any need to establish her as a nefarious figure. Bottom line, this storyline was a complete and utter waste of time that solely serves as a giant red herring. This season, so far, isn’t as agonizingly dull and drab as S6, but the writing is about on the same tier. And if the complete and utter deletion of Deb’s development is any indication, it’s only gonna get worse…
