Dexter (2006)
Another seriously mixed episode. Still love seeing Deb completely broken and filled with hate and despair after S7. By far the highlight of this season thus far. On the other hand, I absolutely despise what they’ve done with Vogel. We’ve been told for 7 years now that Harry is the foundation of Dexter’s entire moral compass and way of life and, subsequently, the catalyst for virtually every single piece of character development Dexter has exhibited throughout the whole show. The relationship between Dexter and Harry and Dexter’s constant conflict about whether he really needs to or even wants to follow Harry’s strict code of conduct has been essentially the backbone of Dexter’s entire character. Hell, it’s what facilitated so much of Dexter and Deb’s conflict in S7. But now, in the last stretch of the show, you suddenly wanna turn around and say that it was really this random character we’ve never even heard mention of before who invented the code and essentially robbed Harry of his agency in handling Dexter’s escalating psychopathy? This completely invalidates all of Dexter’s internal conflict throughout the whole show because, now, the basis for who he is, his literal foundation as a person that has precipitated so much conflict and is much of what’s to blame for what Deb’s going through, isn’t even his fault. It’s not even HARRY’S fault. It’s all the work of this one random character Dexter never even met in person and has no reason to have any attachment to. Ugh….not off to a good start with a titular character in the season, show. Really not off to a good start.
