One of the best surprises of the year for me. I expected to see the typical story about a haunted house, with the typical cliches, jumpscares and a final cheap plot twist, but its much more deep than that. The show tells the story of the Crain family. Steve, Shirley, Theo, Luke and Nell spend a summer at Hill House, with their parents Olivia and Hugh who are repairing it to sell it. The family faces a traumatic event during their stay. The series tells us what happened in that house while narrating the present of the protagonists, two decades later. Each episode tells the story of one of the brothers. So in each episode we get to see more and more layers of what really happened to the family and, more important, what is happening to them now. Everything happens simultaneously, but at the same time its possible to identify a present and the past. Time becomes entangled in itself and weaves together complex situations that at first sight seem unrelated, but slowly links between the events, and the perspectives of the protagonists are discovered. Yes, technically its a horror story, but not the ghost type, its more human. Its the horror of the fear of death, loss and pain. It tells us about addictions, traumas, mental illnesses and, above all, what grief means for a family. It talks about deeply real themes in the rawest way possible. The script and the construction of the characters are also worth highlighting. The Crains are three-dimensional and complex characters. Seeing how they develop and how their relationship with each other evolves is charming. I specially adore the twin dynamic between Luke and Nell, my two favorite characters. And of course, this show is a technical masterpiece in terms of production. The camera work, cinematography and photography are absolutely incredible. Even the casting is so good and selected with so much care. One of the best miniseries i've seen (haven't seen so much), just behind Chernobyl and Band of Brothers. Really high 4 for me.
