Dexter (2006)
Painfully mixed episode at best. On the one hand, I enjoyed seeing one of Dexter’s soon to be victims meet their end by the police’s hand. Was an interesting change of pace. On the other hand, Dexter’s conflict with what he wants to do with Brother Sam’s killer was so forced. Like there’s just NO conflict here. The guy’s a MURDERER. I understand Brother Sam believes Dexter should forgive the guy, but I absolutely refuse to believe that Dexter, after spending all of, what, a week at most with Brother Sam, would have THIS much conflict over killing a murderer who he knows for a fact will more than likely get away with it. That just goes completely against Dexter’s entire moral compass up to this point. Now, tbf, this COULD’VE worked with more development and it’s not like I’m against the idea of Dexter, especially because of some important figure in his life, starting to question his morals and push back against his Dark Passenger, but in execution, it feels so unearned and out of character. It’s not quite as insulting as Dexter claiming “There’s no light in me” at the end of the episode when he committed an act that I doubt one SINGLE viewer would call even remotely morally questionable, especially for Dexter, but it’s still pretty bad. And the next episode, as I remember, is a COMPLETE detour from the main plot, bringing back not one, but TWO previous star characters for no reason. This season just gets worse and worse….
