Truly insane finale, need to talk about this underrated masterpiece in depth because i feel like the previous 2 slighly overshadow this more lowkey contemplative conclusion, it's just as good as the other episodes tho and in my opinion superior
IS IT FUTURE OR IS IT SPOILERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Before i go to the start of the episode i want to make reference to the intro of this season, as the clouds disaped and we get closer to the woods of Twin Peaks we get a faded look at the iconic Laura Palmer photo, even at the intro the implication is made that Laura is the key to all of this, the most important character, after all
LAURA IS THE ONE.......
We continue at the opening and you already know this episode is gonna go hard when the first image is Mr. C burning in the chair all the death tulpas appear in, The Return has had all through out really wacky and unique effects and i think they peak here to give us such an uncanny image with the last we see of evil cooper. Mike then goes and makes another Dougie, the creation of the tulpas completely went over my head first time watching and i thought this was a parralel universe or something like that but it's so sweet now knowing that Cooper wanted Janey E and Sonny Jim to have a Dougie with them, a rare moment of pure joy in the season. Then we go back to that moment in part 17 where Laura dissapers because of Judy's influence, from that we immediately return to a similar sequence from episode 2, i believe the moment Laura goes crazy and gets snatched in the black Lodge is the same moment as the one where she dissapers from the woods with Coop as we hear the same scream and sounds that we heard in episode 2, Judy plucked Laura entierly from that dimension to place where in whatever world we see after the 430 trip. We get our final Black Lodge sequence which slightly mirrors that one of part 2 with some differences, mainly the arms dialogue "IS IT THE STORY OF THE LITTLE GIRL WHO LIVED DOWN THE LANE?", clearly we are putting our focus here on THE GOAT. The interaction between Laura and Dale repeats and Leland urges him again to find Laura. As Dale leaves he encounters Diane, meeting him at the curtain call, not only a reference to the iconic red curtains but considering this is the finale, curtain calls represent the signalling of the end of a performance.
They embark on their 430 mile trip and while not everything is clear to me, electricity always plays a huge deal, we see Cooper check the power lines. I believe the idea of electricy lies in connections and links, in this case the connection with another world. They cross the threshold and as they go, the two of them arrive to a motel to stay in and Diane spies a different Diane, possibly Linda, we never get any indication of Dale seeing another him here but all through out the episode he's acting off, not exactly silly little guy Coop but not exactly evil fucker Mr. C. We really get to see this in the uncomfortable sex scene (Laura Dern is so amazing here it's insane, inventor of acting). Diane puts her hands on Coop's face, giving in to the idea of her not recognizing Cooper or Richard anymore. Love the reuse of the track My Prayer from Part 8, killer song. Cooper gets up, reads Diane or Linda's letter and walks out, as we walks we see him exiting a completely different building that the one he entered the night before and with a different car, there is a surreal vibe to all this sequence that i'm obssesed with, as he drives off we see a light bulb that strikes me quite similar to the shape of the arm, clearly some Judy chicanery is afoot.
She continues her trolling with the diner literally being called Eat at Judy's. This whole scene is fun as hell, Cooper got some moves but again, his mannerisms and his way of talking are all extremely off, maybe is the Richard in him coming out. He gets the address and finally arrives at Laura's, Coop sees a electricity pole quite similar to previous ones in Twin Peaks and finally encounters Laura Palmer.......but she's not Laura, or she says she isn't. Carrie Page is her name and she needs to get out of dodge, love to finally see Sheryl Lee acting outside the black lodge, best episode just for that:), she also has a funny as fuck accent. Really curious how Carrie while doesn't react to Leland, is immediately struck by Sarah's name and has a little white horse figurine, of course being Judy inhabiting Sarah that put Laura in that world.
So our 2 main protagonist, together at last after 25 years set up to go to Laura's childhood home in Twin Peaks. Big fan of the chill car drive with the two of them, "in those days i was too young to know any better.....", While Carrie looks back on her past, it feels as if Laura is looking back at her past, similar to Dougie, traces of ones old self seeped through.
They finally arrive at the old house (the walk to the house is so atmospheric) and who recives them but the real life owner of the house, this plays into the theory of the meta narrative that The Return flirts to a couple of times like when Dougie hears the name Gordon Cole in Sunset Blv or Audrey's plot but i don't think they are in the real world. As they interrogate the owner she name drops the Chelfonts, who are the old lady and the mini David Lynch from fwwm and 2x2, even more indications as to the fabrications of this world. As we near our conclusion a deeply confused Dale ask himself What year is this? finding himself lost in time and place and just as he wonders this Laura finally comes too, with a wave of traumatic memories hitting her like a tsunami, she has no choice but to scream the greatest scream ever filmed and thus the illusion of the dream breaks, for Dale and Laura are the dreamers who live inside the dream.......and Judy is the dreamer.
Too much yap but i love this finale so much, top 5 episodes of all time, now i need some damm good coffee
