firstly, as my most adored thing on the bulletin, sofia’s early little leitmotif. i’ve also found cristin miloti perfectly cast, as easily as i’ll admit the initial draw in colin farrell, the conceptual breadth of her ‘dutiful daughter’ line marked precisely when i knew i’d been moved by their set tone to genuine depth of feeling. i mean, with even that little of gilda, her lyrics bite of the apple. for oz to recognise the futility of mame’s position—as she addresses boys to confess the world’s ills—like little else this delivered beautifully as a series premiere. given the detail only minutes previous, of cobb with his ma’s question of ‘mine’ or not—dichotomising a ‘weak little pussy boy’ from her ‘big, strong bull of a boy’—i’m already noting the penguin as set to be the most fascinating thing as a study, even if only to see his eyes as she holds his head and talks it into him. when it begets itself regardless of sexes, to consider the degree to which particularlites of violence relate to vague masculine / feminine dimorphisms. as weighted as false airs lie when scenes are set between our focal points in sofia and oswald, it’s all as much an advert for their dark eyes, in the little tenacity glitter each give. please just know that as much as i’ve mentioned the physicality of their portrayals, i care a match for how beautifully it’s written. the pause before sof’s choice in ‘untamed’ almost gives the faintest quality of ebb and flow to the two, so i’ll close off with a few of my oz notes, as would be only fitting after i opened with her. in his titular role, trust farrell to play so dirty and rough with a comic book gangster’s little waddle as to imbue him with the most earnest of charms. so much so that i genuinely spoke ‘he’s such a doll,’ aloud at the remembering of names detail. christ, of all comparisons to come to mind. credit’s much due to colin when his penguin breathes the graces of such singular conviction.
