NO SPOILER REVIEW (ONLY COVERING THE FIRST FOUR SEASONS) Dexter is a gripping, edge of your seat drama that is perfect if you’re in the mood for a fast paced ride. Its main character Dexter Morgan is up there with some of the best in TV, he works as a blood spatter analyst at Miami Metro but has a dangerous double life where he murders the murderers and follows a strict code while doing it. It’s got an entertaining premise but also has incredibly tense atmospheres and a surprising level of comedy. The pacing of the show can be off at points especially in season 3 but it stays very engaging majority of the time by leaving you with suspense. It’s a very moral challenging show since Dexter takes matters into his own hands does it make him evil and is it his fault that he is this way. Vigilante or Evil. It’s brilliantly written but the script early on was a little rocky, especially with Dexter’s monologues often not aging very well. Other than that Dexter as a character is compelling and you almost feel guilty for relating to him. I would recommend only watching the first four seasons like I did. This is because some of the most important people working on the show ended up leaving since they felt it had ended. Finishing at season 4 just makes the most sense especially with the shocking ending. Maybe watch the episode after as it feels kind of like an epilogue of the show (similar to how El Camino feels with breaking bad). I don’t want to say to much since it’s great going in blind but I will say the show is very commercial which I can see why it would be a turn off for the show but as someone who doesn’t like a lot of commercial stuff I really enjoyed it. Overall Dexter is a very good and intelligently written show that contains some insanely high highs. It has great antagonists but I would say the side plots are never very good or interesting. There is definitely a formula and repetition to Dexter but if you can get passed that then you will enjoy the show. It is highly original that has great written characters.
