Dexter is a great show but it's true that after season 4 the quality of the show drops but s7 and New Blood are good, not as good as s1, s2 and s4 but they're worth it.
The best thing about the show is Dexter himself, a protagonist so enjoyable and intriguing for exploring the psychology of a serial killer who lives by a moral code taught by his father, causing him to channel his killer instinct only on criminals who fit this code, in addition we see Dexter's other life, the "normal" one where we see him try to "fit in" with society and fake his emotions to have a good disguise but over time we see that his relationships with other characters such as Debra, Rita and the kids make him more human, we see him go through moments of vulnerability and even show feelings in his own way. Dexter has one of the most incredible backstories I've ever seen and it adds so much to the character, not only to the tragic past involving his mother who made him what he is but I also loved seeing Dexter and Harry's flashbacks in s1-s2 with the teachings from Harry.
His internal monologues, which are an important mark from Dexter, are also one of the main reasons why he is such an amazing protagonist, he has so many incredibly written monologues and this internal narration that he does makes us understand him even better because even though he generally doesn't show it emotions, we are practically in his head listening to his desires, thoughts, fears, etc.
Of course, I couldn't forget to mention Michael C Hall's spectacular performance as Dexter.
And I think one of the main issues from the seasons 5-8 is the direction the writers took with Dexter, although he continues to be an enjoyable character to watch he starts to get repetitive unlike the great development he has in the first 4 seasons. In New Blood I think they return to Dexter in an interesting new arc.
Another strong quality from prime Dexter s1-s4 its how they manages to have so many memorable antagonists like the Ice Truck Killer, Trinity Killer, Doakes and even Miguel Prado.
It's sad that after 4 such incredible seasons (s3 is just good tbh) that this show went downhill, s5 is like the most forgettable thing oat and in the end it feels like a big filler that had no impact on the rest of the show, s6 is painfully boring, with terrible and lazy writing also with one of the worst antagonists I've ever seen, s7 is a good season but it can't recover the quality that the show once had and s8 is a complete disaster imo that doesn't start so bad but goes down a insane quality slope.
Overall Dexter is a fun show, with first seasons that are genuinely really great TV that make the show worth it, after s4 it even has its moments especially in New Blood which by the way is the only reason I would give anyone to watch s5-8 from Dexter.
