Firstly, I would appreciate it if u like my review I put a lot of time into it 🤝 Started Dexter by absolutely loving every second of it. But then when I finished season 4 and moved onto season 5 I just completely lost interest in it. Ended up taking like a 2 month break from the show and was seriously considering starting a new show and not even finishing Dexter and just watching season 1-4. But during the summer I thought I might as well finish what I started. And you know what, I’m glad I did as it does make it into my top 5. Dexter is a prime example of a show running for just too long,along with writers completely tanking it, almost identical to GOT. Seasons 1-4 were some of the greatest tv I have ever watched and was most definitely Dexters prime, especially season 4. But 5 is where it really falls off and you start to notice that it just isn’t quite the same. Season 1 just gives off a nostalgic vibe I can’t really explain it. Maybe the way it’s shot, the characters and how innocent and original they are, before any change happens to them. And of course Brian being the antagonist helps. Season 2 I think was on par with season 1, but season 1 just edges it for me. I think because of Lila being in this season and my passionate hatred for her is what makes me slightly prefer season 1. That aside, I think what makes this season so great is Doakes and Dexters dynamic Which I think is Dexters best dynamic on the show, however Brian and Dexter,Miguel and Dexter and Arthur and Dexter are close behind. But of course Michael C Hall always has a great partnership with his costars. I really wish Doakes was around longer. Also Lundy greatly helped this season as well. Potentially the most underrated character on the whole show. His intelligence and all around personality was great. I loved him and Dexter working on the BHB case together. Season 3 is really underrated. Of course it’s probably the weakest from 1-4 but still incredible. As I said before Dexter and Miguel’s dynamic is one of the best in the show and that’s what really helps this season. I think the Skinner drags it down but at least he wasn’t the main antagonist. Season 4 is probably one of the best seasons I’ve ever watched. Of course,as usual and like I’ve said so many times I feel like a broken record, but Dexter has a great dynamic with Arthur. John Lithgow put in a Hall of fame performance as the Trinity killer. Their cat and mouse game through the entire season was special. Rita’s death hit so damn hard though I was genuinely so upset when I watched it. Lundy’s death was also sad as well. Both amazing characters. I thought season 5 was mediocre honestly. Granted it is extremely difficult to follow on from season 4 but it had just lost that spark. And the way they dealt with Rita’s death wasn’t the best I think. But I thought Lumen was decent enough but Jordan chase and the barrel gang really weren’t all that interesting tbh Season 6 I don’t even want to speak about it. its complete shit. Dexter and brother Sam carried this season and they killed him off like not even halfway through. Travis was just not a good antag either. I think it’s the way Colin hanks portrays him just can’t take him seriously. Season 7 was surprisingly good. I thought Isaak was fantastic and intriguing. Think maybe he died too soon but they still managed to carry on the season without him. And I really enjoyed LaGuerta getting close to Dexter but the ending of 7 really bothered me. Season 8 was an abomination, worse than 6. Every ep was shocking. Dr Vogel was an average character. Oliver Saxon was a bad antag who was so mind-numbingly dull. And the ending for 8 was a crime. Genuinely the most dreadful,laughable,nonsensical bullshit I’ve ever seen and genuinely pissed me off so much(but not as much as the GOT ending) Season 9/New blood brought some of that spark back. I thought it was good however not as good as 3 or 7. The ending was good but it felt rushed. Maybe if they had the usual 12 eps instead of 10 then it could have played out better. I talk more about the ending on my sins of the father review. However, in short,my ideal ending would have been for Dexter to get caught, sent back to Miami and punished for his crimes. And he should have had one last talk with Angel,Quinn,Masuka even Matthews. Something that meant they truly know who Dexter is.
