I spent most of this season trying to figure out what this show is even trying to accomplish and came up with no answers. The two main ways for me to see this are 1) character exploration drama or 2) easily consumable spectacle entertainment based on scale, but I'm completely unable to buy into viewing this either way. If this was intended as the former then there'd be, y'know, any sort of depth past "presents as X, then X is explained by Y traumatic event", but that never comes up, so there's pretty clearly no nuance past the most rudimentary to any of the characters. If this was intended as the latter, then I'd expect there be some side I was supposed to take, or at least some characters whose victory would be a good thing, but there just isn't. Every single person(except, like, Shae, I guess), here is evil and the realization of their goals would result in the same cyclical violence and exploitation that's dominated the world for centuries. That, I guess, offers a third option: this is a commentary on cyclical violence and exploitation of power, but, like, if that was really the case, then there would have to be something going on past "power breeds violence" and there never is, so I can't see it as that either. So given all that, I have absolutely no idea what this is trying to accomplish, and if any of the possible ones I've mentioned are the actual intention, then the show has failed miserably. Given all that, it's pretty remarkable that I still enjoy this a good bit, but, hey, life is strange like that. This works for me primarily as a comedy wherein the [unintentional] punchline is that nothing matters, and all the excess, all the betrayal, all the violence, exists for no reason past vague concepts of power and wealth. Seeing evil people tear each other apart is something that's quite amusing in filmic form, and there's little that showcases it better than this, even if this show's success as a comedy was more than likely unintentional. But, hey, enjoyment is enjoyment, and I'm having a good time — a big dumb show like this is exactly what I'm in the mood for right now.
