BoJack Horseman is one of the most unique and profound series on TV, and, despite being an animation, it addresses extremely complex and heavy themes, such as depression, addiction, self-sabotage and the incessant search for validation. The series mixes comedy, drama and a touch of surrealism, which makes it captivating, but, at the same time, uncomfortable to watch (I speak from experience haha), mainly due to the brutal honesty with which it approaches failure and emotional emptiness. Throughout its six seasons, BoJack Horseman establishes itself as a masterpiece for managing to navigate between absurd humor and emotional depth, without ever losing focus on the development of its characters.

The series takes place in a universe where humans and anthropomorphized animals coexist, and the protagonist, BoJack, is a horse who in the 90s was a big TV star thanks to the sitcom "Horsin' Around". But years later, he became a fading celebrity, trapped in a cycle of self-destruction. The great thing about BoJack Horseman is that it doesn't try to make us sympathize with BoJack as a redeemed hero, but rather makes us question whether it's possible to find redemption for someone who constantly fails himself and others.

Right from the start, the series does a brilliant job of creating a scenario where humor is used as a defense mechanism against harsh reality. The quick jokes, animal puns and absurd situations mask the emotional weight that hides between the lines. As the seasons progress, this mask of humor falls, and the series delves deeper and deeper into the characters' psychology, especially BoJack's. The interesting thing is how each season reveals layers of his personality, to the point of often leaving us uncomfortable with his trajectory.

The rhythm of the series is also something to highlight. At first, BoJack Horseman seems like a conventional animated comedy, but gradually the tone becomes darker. Each season introduces new elements, new relationships, and new flaws into BoJack, as well as how they impact those around him. One of the series' greatest strengths is showing the consequences of the protagonist's actions in a brutally honest way, without softening the emotional impact.

This shapes much of BoJack's personality, as he constantly seeks external validation to fill the emotional void he feels. His fame is both a blessing and a curse, since, while it gives him recognition, it also traps him in a cycle of superficiality and existential emptiness.

BoJack's addiction, whether to alcohol, drugs or destructive behaviors, is a clear reflection of his inability to deal with his feelings. At various points in the series, he tries to reinvent himself, seeks help, makes promises to be a better person, but most of the time, he fails. This cycle of trying and failing is what makes BoJack a tragic figure. He is someone who wants to be good, but is so caught up in his own flaws that he can't find a true way out.

BoJack's relationships with the other characters are also a crucial point in understanding his personality. He constantly sabotages the friendships he has, whether with Diane, Todd or Princess Carolyn. Although at times he shows care and affection for them, in the end, BoJack always puts his own needs and insecurities above others. This behavior is not gratuitous, but rather the result of his belief that he is inherently evil and unlovable. This creates a vicious cycle where he hurts those around him and then uses this as justification to continue his self-destructive behavior.

The culmination of this arc comes in the final seasons, when BoJack is finally forced to face the consequences of his actions definitively. The series does an excellent job of showing that, even though he seeks redemption, it doesn't come easily or guaranteed. There's no clear "BoJack got better" conclusion, and that's what makes the ending so impactful. It's open-ended, like real life, where people don't always have redemptive or happy endings.

The series explores Princess Carolyn's desire to find work-life balance, and how her connection with BoJack often takes her away from that goal.

Todd Chavez, BoJack's former roommate, is perhaps the lightest character in the series, but that doesn't stop him from having his own emotional depth. He starts out as a comical and absurdly optimistic character, but over time reveals greater complexity. His friendship with BoJack is full of disappointments, mainly because BoJack constantly devalues ​​him, until Todd decides to cut BoJack out of his life.
