I think it's been about 7 years since I last saw this, but it's exactly as I remembered — stupid and fairly unimpressive, but endearing and fun in spite of itself. It's basically just an endless sequence of betrayal after betrayal with conversations about betrayals building up to each successive betrayal. The characters are fairly well-realized, but none of them are used to meaningful effect past their role in the overall narrative — the show doesn't care who its subjects are as individuals(note on this point — the most disgusting example here is how Daenerys's repeated rape is handled, as it's completely ignored once she "takes control" because it's only a plot device to get her to move towards her new role as Khaleesi), just how they relate to others which prevents any meaningful empathy on my behalf and, as such, the big crazy reveals/betrayals never hit home(though to be fair this is only the tip of the iceberg so I'll see where it goes). Another annoyance for me is the procedural formalism in play — in a wholly realized world, none of the shots elevate the characters and environments that populate them, it's always just "point and shoot" which is really disappointing given how consistently incredible the set design is. Regardless, I vibe with this show, it's fun to view everything in the overall scheme of its utter senselessness — a stream of violence with no meaning or purpose — I fuck with the concept that nothing matters because they live in a world where what ostensibly has meaning clearly is meaningless. The spectacle of it all, the stunning castles and locations, the delightfully disgusting cast all works quite well for me as "dumb fun". I'll definitely continue, but I'll be shocked if it ever moves past just that — "dumb fun".
