GARO (2005)
The Garo (Fanged-Wolf) franchise is one of many great Tokusatsu (Special-Effects) franchises because while it has cool action scenes but more importantly it has heart, soul and spirit screenwritten into it. Garo Season One: Chapter of the Black Wolf is basically the first Twilight movie for Tokusatsu Fans like me. It’s definitely a required watch for how damn good it is. Not only that, it’s also a love story so that’s why I compare it to the Twilight franchise. The best way to sum up Garo: The Chapter of the Black Wolf is that it’s about a Golden Makai (Netherworld) Knight named Saejima Kouga who saves a woman named Mitsuki Kaoru from dying while defeating monsters called “Horrors” with the help from another Makai Knight Suzuma Rei aka the Zero The Silver Knight. But in the end, Kaoru saved Kouga as well from his own grievances upon wondering why his Dad Taiga had died at the hands of a lost soul named Barago aka Kiba (Black-Fang) The Dark Knight. Thus, together they attached to each other. They didn’t need to say “I love you” and all that. They just knew it. It’s beautiful. It’s tragic. But it’s a love story about sacrifice, commitment and kindness for one another. That is the first story of who Garo The Golden Knight is. My only complaints about this Season One are: • The pacing in some episodes could’ve better edited • I didn’t like there was nothing more known about Kodama’s character up till his death in episode 23 In conclusion, other than that, Garo: The Chapter of the Black Wolf was a beautifully screenwritten and crafted season one to the beginning of the franchise. Now I remember why I loved watching it when I had discovered the franchise with Garo: The One Shines in the Darkness. It’s just THAT GOOD.
