Instinct is a fairly serviceable crime procedural. It's the classic knowledgeable oddball paired-up with the hard-boiled cop formula that feels very familiar. It does lack a certain x-factor that means it struggles to measure up to its peers, Bones brings the science, Elementary had the Sherlock Holmes angle, Forever had the sci-fi element and Castle had a lead with an extraordinary amount of charisma. Dylan Reinhart, the spy-turned-author-turned-professor-turned-detective at the heart of this show has almost too many elements trying to fill this void that none of them really get the attention they deserve. To be fair Season 2 does hit its stride a bit more and rolls out a couple of series arcs which keep things interesting, even if one is left frustratingly unresolved. If you like the genre, or are an especially big fan of Alan Cumming, then it's an easy enough watch, but its nothing groundbreaking.
