Another fantastic find for me, a wholesome, genuinely funny and rather original take to the legal/courtroom subgenre. Everyone in the cast delivers but the real star is Park Eun-bin, in a stellar performance as our title character. Now, as someone who’s not autistic I can’t say she nailed beat by beat and delivered an authentic portrayal of someone in the spectrum. As the great LB user Mitch mentioned in of their posts, as every human being, every autistic person is not on the same, for lack of a better word, “level”, so what’s authentic based on real life on its own depends case by case. One thing I can say is the minute she appears on screen, I had to double check whether Park was herself autistic as for me, from the little experience I have, was tremendously convincing. Even my mom who generally don’t go praising performances pointed out how wonderful she was. Whatever the case (and I would love any who’s reading this that may be autistic themselves confirm if I am the right or the wrong), she was spectacular. Maybe too quirky and sometimes a little over the top, but then again, the show as a whole its one of those where the humor and characters sometimes border into the cartoonish. You also have her being a massive (and I mean <b>MASSIVE<b>) fan of whales and dolphins, which at first as many in the show it did bother me but eventually grew on me and I loved how it was use as her way to figure things out, kinda like her mathematic deductions (she has photographic memory you see) and epiphanies. As I said the rest of the characters are great and loved the chemistry with each one of them and how it evolves, namely with Kang Tae-oh, Joo Hyun-young and Ha Yoon-kyung. Kang Ki-young made for a great boss, one that’s both understanding but also dares Woo to be better. And I liked the complexity of the relationship between Woo and his dad. The whole family drama was great, a little too soapy but all the parts involved were great. There’s a character from the firm that serves as an antagonist who motives were a little lame. Understandable I guess, but not sure if they were necessary. In terms of the technical work, the writing was great. Every case is engrossing, filled with humor and great characters that make for really fun times. <i>She-Hulk<i> could have used some of that. Plus, while I am sure they jumped the shark and some of it would not fly well or work in a real court, it was neat to see these defenders not only protecting clients that were innocent but also flawed ones and even the burden that comes with helping those who did wrong and having to help them win. The quirky tone was great implemented, again, everything with the whale and stuff was distracting but loved how they eventually find their way to not only make it entertaining but also adds to the “uniqueness” of the show. The music was good too, minimalistic and simple but also heightens and help sets the tone of the show. All in all, a genuinely funny show from beginning to end bolstered by a marvelous lead performance and great ideas that gives a fresh spin into a trite genre. Wholeheartedly recommend.
