Very good first season. Though sloppy at times, mostly with some weak acting among the cast that balances out with some great acting from the main set of characters, some poor CGI, while also having pretty alright dialogue, the season has its ups and downs in its short run. It works perfectly as a setup and all in all at the end of the season it is definitely memorable for its fantastic setup, especially for a show with 11 seasons and 3 spin-offs. It quickly establishes the themes that the show will be tackling, the tone is serious and yet also very welcoming from a diverse group of characters that are loveable and hateable which makes for a pleasuresable viewing experience. It sets up many plotlines that will be reused in future seasons like bandits, zombie attacks, and survival runs, and my favourite being the way they showcase different forms of survivors in the apocalypse, some selfless, some selfish, some who are grieving from their losses, some who don’t change, some who change for the better, some who are forced to move on, and some who don’t want to move on. It’s very interesting to watch and it’s very fascinating as a viewer who thought it would be disappointing. The execution of some of these plotlines are quite weak, like bandits who come out of nowhere, and zombies who pop up when the writers want to. That’ll always be an issue with this show but it’s just how it works. It makes it more fun to watch, but if the writers feel like killing off a character they could just spawn in a horde of zombies as a trump card to continue the story. I know it’s “realistic” that bandits and zombies would just show up at any unexpected moment, but that doesn’t mean it will work as great writing. But overall it’s just a great first season of TV that has some great entertainment that is very easy to binge.
