Batman is one of my favorite characters in all of existence, if not my MOST favorite, so this was great to see that “Batman: The Caped Crusader” released today.
This was a great episode, but I got pretty disappointed when I saw that The Penguin was a woman, I mean he’s been my favorite villain since my early childhood, but I read about it and The Penguin’s sudden spin off his character, becoming a woman was apparently because it was an effort by the creators to present a different spin on the character, which was kind of sad seeing him different but co-creator Bruce Timm had an idea to make things a bit different than the from the normal DC Universe, considering he has been involved and a part of “Batman: The Animated Series”, “The New Batman Adventures” and “Batman Beyond”, he probably didn’t want the story to be almost completely identical to the others, and we gotta bare in mind that since he has been involved in this much Batman, he probably knows what he is doing, I don’t think we gotta be worried, though it’s a bit disappointing that it’s not my normal Penguin.
“Timm revealed that it was part of the early talks about creating the show that something new must be brought to the table rather than churning the same old thing again and again. He also didn’t want the changes to happen for the sake of it. Every change and addition had to mean something for the character, opening new avenues for the story and inviting the audience to make discoveries about the characters they have known and loved.
Minnie Driver, who voices the Penguin in ‘Batman: Caped Crusader’ revealed that the decision to make the Penguin a woman took place long before she was approached to voice the role. She was excited to explore this opportunity and was delighted that gender-swapping did nothing to change the character’s core. She assured the audience that the character’s essence and integrity were maintained, keeping the Penguin just as dreadful while giving her a fresh spin.”
I loved that this new series was set in a 1940’s Gotham City in an era where Batman isn’t known yet by criminals, police officers and civilians. I really like it since I love the 1940’s in general, and to see that the characters are wearing trench coats, has Tommy guns etc really brings me joy!
It’s sad to hear Batman being played by another man than Kevin Conroy (who sadly passed away on the 20th of November 2022, rest in peace 🕊️🙏🏼). I do think that Hamish Linklater plays Batman really well so far and I wish him all the best and that he will be great in the rest of the series, though no one will ever top Kevin Conroy when playing The Batman.
I think that’s all I had to say for now, I’ll update this review if I got any more I want to say on my mind, see y’all!
