It’s a fun season with low low’s and high high’s
It just feels like the writers have so much they can accomplish with so much to do but rather they choose to stay in their comfort zone and try and stick with the same formula as the past 3 seasons. Also not utilising the best parts of the show and focusing on things that we don’t care about like Frenchie subplot (no I’m not one of those people who hate on him cuz he’s bi) and deciding to leave his romance with Kimiko to the VERY END. Like they just dropped that thing with him and Colin. The show just handle Frenchie so poorly.
Also the the comedy can be very hit and miss for me the humour is best when it’s subtle or just purely from hilarious dialogue (mainly from Deep and Noir) and the show expects you to find the most shock value in your face scenes ever funny, which it’s not. Like no one is gonna find Hughie getting abused every episode funny it’s just dragged. I miss when the show sort of prioritised the comedy in the earlier seasons with scenes purely dedicated to being hilarious. Now it feels like the comedy is being put down more and more. I’m not saying The Boys can’t be serious and emotional at times in fact the show is at its best when it reaches those moments, but people seem to forget how insanely ridiculous the show is and if the comedy is being less focused on, the show doesn’t feel self aware in its own absurdity.
Obviously the best parts of the season is Homelander (OBVIOUSLY!) Anthony Starr is so brilliant it kinda annoys me how much of a level he is above the rest of the cast and pretty much everything about the show. He needs his Emmy and his portrayal as Homelander every scene is pure brilliance especially in 4x4 some of the most tense scenes of a villain in tv.
I also really liked what they did with A-Train this season. I’ve always been fond of his character in the show even in season 1 but his redemption was so satisfying to watch. I’m pretty disappointed but also happy that he didn’t make an appearance in the finale. I think everyone might be a little disappointed as a lot of people expected a big showdown between A-Train and Homelander. But I’m just glad he survived.
Ryan was also great despite his goofy ahh voice. Him deciding between Homelander and Butcher was interesting to watch and even by the end he’s still conflicted. He’s one of the most human / normal characters on the show and is a rare case of an actual good child actor.
Yeah good season the hate it’s getting purely because of people crying about Frenchie being bi (which he has been since S1 but some people just watch the show with their eyes closed I guess) is just ridiculous. Homelander is goated yada ya da ya da can’t believe I wrote this much on a The Boys review 😹
